Chapter 1 — The Marriage Built on a Lie

That night, Grace did not cry in front of anyone.

She drove away through the cold rain, her hands shaking so badly that she had to pull over to the side of the road. City lights blurred behind the wet windshield. Her phone kept lighting up.

Daniel called.

Maya called.

Her mother called.

Her younger sister texted:

“Where are you? I’m worried about you.”

Grace stared at the screen for a long time.

Then she turned her phone off.

She did not return to the mansion she had shared with Daniel. Instead, she went to the small apartment she had owned before getting married — the one Daniel had told her many times to sell because “they didn’t need it anymore.”

When she opened the door, the apartment was covered in a thin layer of dust. Everything was simple, just as it had been years ago: a gray sofa, a few dried plants, an old bookshelf, and her graduation photo sitting on the table.

Grace sat down on the floor, her back against the door.

Only then did the tears fall.

She did not cry only because Daniel had betrayed her.

She cried because for five years, she had lived inside a house built by the lies of the two people she trusted most.

The next morning, Daniel stood outside her apartment door very early.

Grace looked through the peephole and saw him still wearing the same suit from the night before. His hair was messy, his eyes dark with exhaustion. He no longer looked like the elegant man everyone admired.

He looked like someone who had lost something he would never get back.

“Grace,” he said through the door, “please. Give me ten minutes.”

Grace did not open the door.

“I know you’re listening,” Daniel continued. “I was wrong. But it’s not what you think.”

Grace stood inside, silent.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Six years ago, my father’s company was on the edge of bankruptcy. Maya was also in trouble with her family. Her grandfather left her a huge inheritance, but the condition was that she had to be married before she turned thirty. Otherwise, the money would go to her uncle.”

Grace closed her eyes.

Daniel continued:

“Maya begged me to help her. She said it only had to be a marriage on paper for six months. In return, she would invest in my family’s company. I agreed. I thought it was just a deal. No love. No living together. Nothing.”

Grace opened her eyes.

His explanation did not hurt less.

It only made everything more disgusting.

“Then I met you,” Daniel said, his voice cracking. “I truly loved you. I planned to tell you, but Maya said she had already filed the divorce papers. I believed her. By the time I found out she hadn’t signed them, our wedding was close. I panicked. I was afraid of losing you. I thought I could fix everything after the wedding.”

Grace gave a cold laugh from behind the door.

After the wedding.

After the honeymoon.

After the first year.

After the second year.

After the fifth year.

How many “afters” had he given himself?

Daniel knocked lightly.

“Grace, I know I have no right to ask for forgiveness. But please believe me, I never loved Maya.”

Finally, Grace opened the door.

Daniel looked up, hope flashing in his eyes.

But that hope disappeared the moment he saw Grace’s calm, cold face.

“You never loved Maya,” Grace said. “But you still married her.”

Daniel froze.

“You said it was a deal,” Grace continued. “You used that marriage to save your family’s company. Then you used a lie to marry me. You didn’t love Maya, but you didn’t respect me enough to tell me the truth either.”

“Grace…”

“Don’t say my name like you’re the victim.”

Daniel fell silent.

Grace looked at the man who had once been her whole world. She had trusted him so deeply that she never checked his phone, never asked where he was, never doubted anything.

Now, just looking at him made her tired.

“I need all the documents,” she said. “Your marriage certificate with Maya. Investment papers. Messages. Emails. Everything.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What are you going to do?”

Grace looked straight into his eyes.

“Take back my life.”

For the next three days, Grace disappeared from everyone’s sight.

She did not answer Daniel.

She did not meet Maya.

She did not show up at the charity organization where she worked as a communications director.

But she did not collapse the way everyone thought she would.

Grace called her father’s private lawyer. She contacted the civil registration office. She obtained a legal copy of the marriage certificate between Daniel and Maya. She checked the registration date, the marital status, and the divorce records.

There was no divorce.

No annulment.

No completed legal process.

What did that mean?

Grace’s marriage to Daniel was not only an emotional lie.

It might not even be legally valid.

When the lawyer told her that, Grace sat still for a long time.

Five years as a wife.

Five years taking care of Daniel’s mother when she was sick.

Five years building the image of a perfect family with him.

May you like

Five years, only to find out she might never have been the legal wife of that man at all.

But the biggest shock had not yet come.
