Chapter 8 - Clinic Zero

Victoria was not arrested with Ryan.

Ethan made that decision in front of the federal agents, the board, and Daniel. The agents objected until Daniel showed them the live video and explained that Victoria was the demanded exchange. A tactical team could follow, but any visible intervention might kill Lily.

"She is a suspect," Agent Mara Keene said. "You cannot simply leave with her."

"Then accompany us," Ethan replied. "But she goes."

Victoria stood beside the windows with her wrists uncuffed. "They will detect a convoy."

"Where is Clinic Zero?" Ethan asked.

"An abandoned Morrow facility beneath St. Orison Hospital. The hospital closed nine years ago."

"Why call it Zero?"

"Because no patient officially entered and none officially left."

The answer silenced the room.

Ethan, Victoria, Daniel, Claire, and Agent Keene traveled in an unmarked van. A tactical team followed at a distance without lights. Ryan remained in custody, shouting that Victoria would abandon him.

During the drive, Ethan sat across from his wife.

Without the mourning performance, she looked exhausted rather than elegant. A faint line appeared between her eyebrows. He remembered touching that line when she pretended to sleep.

"Is Lily your daughter?" he asked.

Victoria looked toward the darkened window. "Yes."

"Who is her father?"

"A researcher named Adrian Cross. Not a relative, despite the name. Morrow assigned surnames to create false family records. He died before she was born."

"Did you love him?"

"I was seventeen. Love was not a category they encouraged."

Claire's expression hardened but not toward Ethan.

Victoria continued. She had grown up inside Morrow's behavioral program. Children of researchers were observed, scored, and assigned functions. Some became recruiters. Others became medical technicians, financial operatives, or proximity agents trained to enter the lives of powerful targets.

"I was good at becoming necessary," she said. "They sent me to you because Samuel refused to surrender the C-17 records."

"You married me for access."

"At first."

The words hung between them.

Ethan asked, "And later?"

Victoria met his eyes. "Later made no difference to what I did."

It was the closest thing to honesty she had offered.

St. Orison Hospital stood beyond a chain-link fence in an industrial district south of the city. Its windows were boarded, its brick stained by rain. Victoria led them through a service entrance and down three flights of stairs.

The basement corridor smelled of bleach despite years of abandonment.

White doors bore faded numbers. Behind one, rusted restraints remained attached to a narrow bed. Behind another, shelves held empty vials marked with the divided-circle symbol.

Victoria stopped before an elevator without buttons. She pressed her compass-and-key pendant into a hidden slot. The doors opened.

"Samuel built the override," she said. "He helped me hide Lily after he discovered what Morrow intended for her."

Ethan stared at her. "My father helped you?"

"He believed saving one child was the only honest thing either of us had done."

The elevator descended.

Clinic Zero was still active.

Lights glowed beneath sealed laboratory doors. Computer servers hummed. Cameras followed them as they moved. A voice came through the ceiling speakers.

"Victoria Cross. Subject Carter. Welcome home."

Victoria flinched at the word home.

They entered the white room from the video. Lily remained bound to the chair, but the masked man was gone. Ethan crossed the room and cut the restraints.

"Are you hurt?"

Lily shook her head. "They took blood. They kept asking where my mother hid the key."

Victoria remained in the doorway.

Lily looked at her for the first time knowing the truth.

"You are her," she said.

Victoria's composure broke. Not dramatically. No sob, no collapse. Her face simply lost the structure that had held it for fourteen years.

"I am sorry," she whispered.

A steel shutter slammed over the exit.

Gas began hissing from vents near the ceiling.

Lena had given Ethan emergency masks, but there were only four. Six people stood in the room.

Victoria seized the control panel and tore away its cover. "This is not poison. It is the paralytic."

"Can you stop it?" Keene asked.

"Not from here. The manual valve is in the observation chamber."

"Where?"

Victoria pointed to a glass wall beyond the room. "On the other side."

The only access was a narrow maintenance conduit.

Lily said, "I can fit."

Victoria grabbed her arm. "No."

"You do not get to decide for me now."

The sentence struck Victoria harder than any accusation.

Lily crawled into the conduit with a mask and a flashlight. Ethan watched her shadow move behind the glass. His limbs began to feel heavy. Claire helped Daniel secure masks while Agent Keene tried to force the shutter.

Lily reached the valve and turned it.

The gas stopped.

Then the observation chamber lights came on.

A man stood behind Lily.

He was tall, silver-haired, and carried no mask. A scar crossed his chin.

Thomas Vale had described that scar at Pier Nine, but the man was too old to be Ryan.

Victoria whispered his name.

"Dr. Julian Morrow."

The founder was not a network after all.

He was alive.
