Chapter 7 - Everything Borrowed

Ethan believed Tom was bluffing until his phone stopped working.
At 8:14 that evening, the company mobile plan was suspended.
At 8:22, the fuel card in Ethan’s wallet was cancelled.
At 8:31, Ashley received a notification that the company guarantee on her vehicle lease had been withdrawn due to unauthorized use.
At 9:05, the two disputed transfers from Bennett Renovations were reversed pending investigation.
The next morning, a company representative collected Ethan’s vehicle.
He stood on the driveway watching it disappear.
For years, he had described the black SUV as proof of his success. He had posed beside it in photographs and parked it outside restaurants where he could not afford to eat.
It had never belonged to him.
Neither had the office furniture he had moved into E&A Home Concepts.
Neither had the computers.
Neither had the client list.
Tom had permitted him to use those resources while he tried to establish himself.
Ethan had mistaken permission for ownership.
Ashley sat on the front steps surrounded by luggage.
“You told me everything was legal,” she said.
“It would have been if the lender hadn’t called Dad.”
“You forged his signature.”
“I copied an authorization.”
“You forged it.”
“You signed as a witness.”
“Because you told me he had already agreed!”
Ethan turned away.
Ashley began to understand that she had not simply followed her husband into a family disagreement. She had signed her name to a false document.
“You made me part of this.”
“You enjoyed the money.”
“What money? We’re broke.”
Linda watched the argument from the living room window.
Part of her wanted to run outside, bring them both inside, and solve the problem as she had solved every childhood crisis.
Tom stood beside her.
“You don’t have to watch.”
“I do.”
A rideshare vehicle arrived to take Ethan and Ashley to a budget hotel.
Before entering the car, Ethan looked toward the house.
Linda stepped onto the porch.
“Mom,” he called.
For one dangerous second, hope entered her face.
Then Ethan said, “Tell Dad to fix this.”
The hope disappeared.
“You still think this is something being done to you,” she replied.
“You’re choosing him over me.”
“No. Your father and I are choosing the truth over your lies.”
“I’m your son.”
“And I am your mother. The woman you left outside in the cold with her medicine.”
Ethan looked away.
Linda continued.
“I loved you before you owned anything. I would have loved you if your business failed. I would have helped you rebuild from nothing.”
“Then help me now.”
“Help is not erasing consequences.”
The rideshare driver placed the final suitcase in the trunk.
Linda stepped back inside.
She did not close the door in anger.
She closed it calmly.
That hurt Ethan more.
Inside, Tom placed the old metal key on the hallway table.
Linda sat beside him.
“I keep wondering what I did wrong.”
Tom took her hand.
“We gave him love. He decided love meant unlimited access.”
“Will he be arrested?”
“I don’t know.”
“Do you want him to be?”
Tom considered the question.
“I want him to become someone who understands what he did. I don’t know what it will take.”
Linda leaned against his shoulder.
Outside, the car carrying their son turned the corner and disappeared.

For the first time in months, the house was quiet.
But it did not yet feel peaceful.
