Chapter 4 - The Mother Behind the Lie

Marissa had spent years believing that fear was the same as helplessness.
Edric controlled the bank accounts, the car, the house, and every password. He monitored her messages and convinced her that leaving would mean homelessness.
Whenever she mentioned the twins’ discomfort, he accused her of turning them against him.
Whenever she threatened to call for help, he reminded her that he had friends in influential places.
But the worst weapon was never money.
It was guilt.
He told Marissa that the girls needed stability after losing their father. He claimed that another broken home would destroy them.
So she stayed.
Then she lied.
She lied to teachers. She lied to neighbors. She lied to doctors about her own injuries.
Each lie bought a few days of temporary calm, and each day of calm allowed the danger to grow.
Detective Ortiz entered the interview room carrying a small evidence bag containing Chloe’s phone.
“We found the recording.”
Marissa looked toward the door.
“Edric will know she recorded him.”
“He will not have access to your daughters.”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand that your daughters believed they had to protect you.”
Marissa’s eyes filled with tears.
Detective Ortiz played a portion of the recording.
When Edric’s threat about last winter filled the room, Marissa covered her face.
“They knew?”
“They knew enough to be terrified.”
“I thought I was keeping them safe.”
“You told the hospital they fell.”
“He said he would ruin their future. He said he would have Faye’s scholarship taken away. He said Chloe would be sent somewhere we could never find her.”
“Did you believe him?”
“Yes.”
Detective Ortiz leaned forward.
“Do you believe him now?”
Marissa looked at the locked room across the corridor.
“No.”
“Then tell me everything.”
Marissa spoke for nearly two hours.
She described financial control, threats, hidden cameras, destroyed phones, and the names of people Edric claimed would protect him.
Some of those names were real.
His claims about their loyalty were not.
One was a retired judge who barely knew him. Another was a police captain Edric had met at a charity dinner. A third was a school board donor who had already stopped speaking to him after a business dispute.
Edric’s empire of influence was partly an illusion.
Fear had made it seem real.
Marissa also revealed a locked cabinet in Edric’s home office where he stored family documents, the girls’ passports, and a small digital recorder he used to capture household conversations.
“He liked keeping proof of what people said,” she explained. “He thought it gave him control.”
Detective Ortiz obtained a search warrant before sunrise.
Inside the cabinet, officers found more than documents.

They found recordings.
Edric had preserved years of his own threats.
