Chapter 12 - The Mother Who Watched From the Shadows

Lauren could not move.

The woman appeared older than the mother in Lauren’s memories, yet every detail felt familiar. The slight tilt of her head. The small scar beside her eyebrow. The way her left hand curled inward when she was anxious.

“Helen?” Rebecca’s voice came faintly through Lauren’s hidden earpiece.

The woman looked directly at the transmitter beneath Lauren’s collar.

“Your sister always was impatient.”

Lauren’s knees weakened.

“You’re alive.”

Helen Ellison’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.”

Twenty-two years of grief became anger in a single breath.

“You’re sorry?”

“I had no choice.”

“You had two daughters.”

“I know.”

“You let us believe you drowned.”

“If North Vale knew I was alive, they would have taken you.”

“They took everything anyway.”

Helen flinched.

Lauren wanted to run to her.

She also wanted to strike her.

Instead, she remained between the criminals and the man who had betrayed her.

Graham said, “Enough family reunion. The schedule.”

Helen held out her hand to Lauren.

“Give it to me.”

“Why?”

“Because I know how to end the trust.”

Graham drew a pistol.

“You know how to activate it.”

Lauren looked from Helen to Graham.

“What is the trust really?”

Helen answered carefully.

“Your father and I created a recovery fund using money traced from North Vale’s early accounts.”

“You stole it?”

“We returned stolen funds to a legal trust. The six million belonged to families North Vale destroyed.”

“Then why name Andrew?”

“Because Anna Matthews died protecting the original ledger. Her son was entitled to choose whether he would help expose the network.”

Andrew gave a broken laugh.

“I chose badly.”

Helen looked at him.

“You were trained to.”

“That doesn’t excuse me.”

“No.”

Andrew turned toward Lauren.

“I forged your name. I lied. I watched my mother hurt our daughters because I was afraid of losing her approval.”

Patricia’s face hardened.

“Ungrateful boy.”

Andrew stared at her.

“You taught me that love was something I earned by obeying.”

“I gave you everything.”

“You gave me your name because my real mother frightened you.”

Graham raised the gun toward Lauren.

“The document.”

Helen stepped forward.

“It is not the original.”

Graham’s gaze sharpened.

Lauren felt the room change.

“How do you know?” he asked.

“Thomas embedded a blue thread through every original schedule. That paper has none.”

Graham looked at Lauren.

“You brought a copy.”

“I brought what you deserved.”

Victor seized Lauren’s arm.

Mara’s voice came through the earpiece.

Hold position.

Graham tore the document in half.

“Where is the original?”

“Somewhere you will never find it.”

Patricia grabbed Chloe’s small stuffed rabbit from a nearby table.

Lauren’s heart stopped.

Captain Blue.

“How did you get that?”

Patricia smiled.

“The children are not as safe as you think.”

Lauren lunged, but Victor restrained her.

“Where are they?”

Helen’s face went pale.

Graham said, “A security officer at your protected house owed North Vale money.”

Lauren heard Mara issuing urgent orders through the transmitter.

Patricia squeezed the rabbit by one ear.

“Give us the original, or your daughters disappear exactly as Helen’s did.”

Lauren looked at her mother.

“You let them take us?”

“No. Thomas moved you before North Vale reached the house. But I could never return.”

Andrew struggled violently against the restraints.

“If you touched my daughters, I’ll kill you.”

Patricia slapped him.

“You allowed me to touch them for years.”

The words silenced him.

Graham’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What do you mean they’re gone?”

Lauren heard Mara’s voice.

The girls are safe. Officer Reed moved them before the breach.

Lauren exhaled.

Graham looked toward the stairwell.

“Police.”

Victor dragged Lauren backward.

Helen pulled a small device from her coat and pressed a button.

The temporary lights went out.

Gunfire erupted.

Lauren dropped to the floor.

Mara’s team entered from two stairwells.

Victor fired toward the doorway. An officer returned fire, striking him in the leg.

Patricia ran toward the open construction lift.

Andrew threw his bound body sideways, knocking her down.

Graham seized Helen around the neck and pressed the pistol against her head.

“Everyone stops,” he shouted.

The room froze.

Graham backed toward the outer platform, pulling Helen with him.

Below them, the river moved black beneath the unfinished tower.

Lauren rose slowly.

“Let her go.”

“Give me the original.”

“You can’t use it.”

“I can destroy it.”

“No. You want the list of beneficiaries.”

Graham smiled.

“You are learning.”

Helen whispered, “Lauren, don’t.”

Lauren reached inside the folder.

She removed a sealed envelope.

Graham’s eyes fixed on it.

Lauren tossed it toward him.

He released Helen with one arm to catch it.

Helen drove her elbow into his ribs.

The gun fired.

Andrew shouted.

Graham and Helen crashed against the temporary railing.

The metal gave way.

Helen caught the edge with both hands.

Graham fell into the darkness.

Lauren ran and grabbed her mother’s wrist.

Andrew, still bound, threw himself across the floor and caught Helen’s other arm.

Together they pulled her back onto the platform.

Below them, police boats searched the river.

Graham Vale’s body was not found.
