Chapter 5 - The Family Meeting

Linda organized the first family meeting without asking Sophia.
She called it a “discussion about everyone’s future.”
The meeting took place at Sophia and Ethan’s home on a Sunday afternoon. Linda arrived with Ryan, three folders, and the confidence of someone who had already made every decision.
Ryan appeared exhausted. His expensive watch was gone, and the smile he usually wore had been replaced by restless irritation.
Linda began with a speech about Charles.
“He worked hard so future generations would be secure,” she said.
Sophia almost corrected her.
Charles had never met Linda until Sophia’s wedding. Ryan was not his future generation.
Instead, she remained silent.
Linda opened the first folder.
“We believe the wisest plan is to place the inheritance into a family holding company.”
“Who would control it?” Sophia asked.
“Ethan and Ryan understand business.”
Sophia glanced at Ethan.
He studied the table.
“And what would I do?” she asked.
“You would be protected,” Linda said.
“From my own money?”
“From making emotional decisions while grieving.”
Ryan leaned forward.
“This is not about taking anything from you. My company has valuable contracts. I only need temporary liquidity.”
“How much?”
“Three million initially.”
Sophia stared at him.
Ryan continued quickly.
“Another two million could purchase distressed equipment at a discount. The remaining amount would stay invested.”
Linda smiled as though the plan were generous.
They intended to take five million dollars immediately.
Sophia turned to Ethan.
“Did you know about this proposal?”
“We’ve discussed options.”
“We?”
“My family.”
Sophia felt strangely calm.
“I am your family.”
Ethan sighed.
“You know what I mean.”
Yes, she thought.
She finally did.
Sophia asked Ryan for audited financial statements, tax records, debt schedules, and copies of his major contracts.
His face darkened.
“I’m not handing over private company information.”
“Then I’m not handing over private money.”
Linda struck the table with her palm.
“This selfishness is exactly what I feared.”
Sophia stood.
“The meeting is over.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“You think that money makes you untouchable?”
“No. I think the law makes it mine.”
At the word law, Ethan’s eyes flickered.
For a fraction of a second, Sophia saw fear.
That evening, she reviewed the security system installed after a series of neighborhood break-ins.
The dining room camera had recorded the meeting.
Sophia watched Ethan’s face when she mentioned the law.
Then she opened the home office computer.
Months earlier, Ethan had asked her to share access because they sometimes used the same printer and cloud storage. Sophia rarely checked his files.
Now she searched for Ryan’s company name.
She found a folder labeled FAMILY OPTIONS.
Inside were proposed transfer agreements, loan guarantees, and a spreadsheet showing how seven million dollars could be divided.
Ryan: $4,500,000.
Linda: $750,000.
Ethan’s company: $1,250,000.
Home renovations and travel: $500,000.
Sophia’s name appeared nowhere except at the top:
SOURCE OF FUNDS: SOPHIA BENNETT CARTER ESTATE.
She also discovered emails.
In one, Ethan wrote to Ryan:
Keep Mom calm. Sophia will resist at first, but she hates conflict. Once she believes the employees will suffer, she’ll release the money.
Ryan replied:
And the postnup?
Ethan answered:
It only matters if she refuses. She won’t.
Sophia sat alone in the dark office for a long time.

Then she copied every file.
