Chapter 5 - The Accident They Invented

Claire heard Ethan speaking before she understood what he was saying.

“We need an ambulance.”

Margaret stood near the sink, breathing heavily.

“She made me do it.”

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Do not say that again.”

Claire tried to sit up.

“Help me.”

Neither of them moved toward her.

Ethan looked around the kitchen as though calculating the cost of a damaged property.

“The floor needs to be cleaned.”

Claire stared at him.

“Call someone.”

“I am calling.”

He had not yet touched his phone.

Margaret removed her white jacket and inspected the sleeve.

“She grabbed me.”

“I was trying to get away from you,” Claire cried.

Ethan finally dialed emergency services.

His voice changed immediately.

It became frightened and gentle.

“My wife had an accident. She spilled a pot while cooking. Please send help.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

He crouched beside her and covered the phone.

“You are in shock.”

“You saw what she did.”

“Think about what happens if you accuse my mother.”

Margaret stood behind him.

“You would ruin Ethan’s career. The newspapers would destroy this family.”

Claire looked from one to the other.

They were not afraid for her.

They were afraid of her.

“Tell the truth,” she whispered.

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“The truth is that you dropped the pot.”

He returned to the emergency call.

Margaret began wiping the floor.

Claire could hear them building the lie around her.

She had been exhausted.

She had ignored warnings.

She had lost her balance.

Ethan would say he arrived seconds later.

Margaret would say she tried to help.

By the time the paramedics entered, the story had been polished.

Ethan held Claire’s hand in front of them.

“My poor wife,” he said.

Margaret cried without tears.

Claire opened her mouth, but fear closed her throat.

What would happen if nobody believed her?

Ethan was respected in the community. His company sponsored local events. Margaret served on hospital fundraising committees and knew several members of the board.

Claire had no job, no private bank account, and almost no contact with her friends.

Even the house cameras belonged to Ethan.

Inside the ambulance, a paramedic asked Claire what happened.

Before she could answer, Ethan leaned through the open door.

“She spilled soup while cooking.”

The paramedic looked at Claire.

“Is that correct?”

Claire saw Ethan watching her.

Margaret stood behind him.

Claire nodded once.

At the hospital, Ethan remained beside her during every question.

He answered for her.

When the nurse asked whether Claire felt safe at home, Ethan laughed.

“She’s the safest woman in the city.”

Claire stared at the wall.

The nurse did not laugh.

Her name was Elena Morris. She had kind eyes and a calm voice.

“I would like to speak with the patient privately.”

Ethan’s smile faded.

“There are no secrets between us.”

“Hospital policy,” Elena replied.

Margaret intervened.

“My daughter-in-law becomes confused under stress. My son should remain.”

Elena looked at Claire.

“Would you like them to stay?”

Claire’s mouth went dry.

Ethan squeezed her shoulder.

The gesture looked affectionate.

It felt like a warning.

Before Claire answered, Dr. Samuel Reed entered the room.

He examined the notes, then looked at Ethan’s hand on Claire’s shoulder.

“Everyone except the patient needs to step outside.”

Ethan objected.

Dr. Reed opened the door.

“Now.”
