Chapter 14 - The Son No One Knew

Daniel had no son.
He repeated the sentence until it sounded like evidence rather than panic. He had never been married before Emma. He had never knowingly fathered a child. Yet the file listed Lucas Mercer, age six, active subject, paternal match confirmed.
Mara ordered an immediate search of sealed birth records, fertility clinics, and Mercer Medical employee insurance files. Thomas looked devastated rather than surprised.
Daniel saw it. “You know something.”
Thomas asked to speak privately. Emma refused to leave.
Six years earlier, before Daniel met Emma, Linda pressured him to provide a fertility sample for what she described as hereditary screening connected to the trust. Daniel remembered the appointment. A Mercer physician collected blood and semen, saying the material would be destroyed after genetic analysis.
It was not destroyed.
Thomas had discovered a reference to a resulting embryo while investigating Halcyon but never found proof of a birth. He feared Linda created a backup heir.
“You knew this was possible and said nothing?” Daniel asked.
“I did not want to accuse your mother without evidence.”
Adelaide, seated nearby in a wheelchair, closed her eyes. “One more document.”
The phrase struck Thomas like a verdict.
Within forty-eight hours, federal analysts identified Lucas. He lived under the name Lucas Reed in a private residential school outside Boston. His legal guardian was a shell foundation. His birth mother, according to sealed records, was a deceased surrogate named Camille Ross.
Camille was not dead.
She had entered witness protection after attempting to report Halcyon. Mara obtained permission to interview her. Camille said Hale implanted an embryo created from Daniel’s genetic material and an anonymous donor. She carried the pregnancy under constant monitoring. After birth, the baby was taken before she could hold him. Halcyon later staged her death when she escaped.
The anonymous donor file had been altered.
A partial genetic record suggested the egg came from another Lantern subject.
Emma felt the trap widening. “Could it have been mine?”
Dr. Wells compared available data. “No. The mitochondrial markers do not match you.”
Relief came with guilt. Somewhere another woman had been used.
Agents reached the school before dawn. Lucas was gone. Staff said a man with valid guardianship documents removed him two days earlier. Security footage showed Victor Hale wearing a cap and using crutches.
Hale had escaped federal medical custody again.
This time, evidence pointed to help from inside the transport contractor. The consortium still had access to systems, badges, records, and people willing to disappear.
A message arrived from Hale: Bring the original Mercer agreement and Linda Mercer to Pier 19 at midnight. Come without police if you want the boy alive.
Mara assumed it was a trap. Daniel intended to go anyway.
Linda agreed to cooperate only after seeing Lucas’s photograph. Her reaction was strange. She touched the screen with one finger, and for a moment her face softened.
“You knew him,” Emma said.
“I visited twice a year.”
Daniel turned away in disgust.
Linda claimed Lucas was meant to satisfy the heir clause if Daniel never had a child. She insisted the boy was cared for and educated, not harmed. She did not know Voss had added him to Lantern.
“You created a child as a financial instrument,” Daniel said.
“I ensured the family survived.”
“A family that requires this should not survive.”
At Pier 19, rain hammered the warehouse roof. Mara’s team remained hidden despite Hale’s demand. Daniel carried a decoy copy of the agreement. Linda wore a concealed transmitter beneath prison transport clothing. Emma insisted on attending and remained in an armored vehicle with Mia.
Hale appeared on an overhead walkway with Lucas beside him.
The boy was small, pale, and unnaturally calm. He wore headphones playing the Lantern melody.
Daniel looked up at the child who shared half his DNA.
“Lucas,” he called. “My name is Daniel.”
Lucas removed one headphone. “I know.”
Hale held a remote control. Wires were visible beneath the boy’s jacket.
Linda’s control finally shattered. “Victor, he is a child.”
“So was Emma,” Hale replied. “You never objected then.”
The remote controlled an explosive vest, but Mara’s sniper could not fire because Hale stood partially behind Lucas.
Emma left the armored vehicle before anyone could stop her.
She walked into the warehouse with her hands visible.
Hale pointed the remote toward her. “You were not invited.”
“I’m the reason you’re still bargaining,” Emma said. “Voss needs Lantern subjects alive.”
Lucas stared at her.
Emma began humming the melody.
The boy’s expression changed. His breathing became rapid. Hale told her to stop.
Emma changed the final note, singing the version Rachel had used throughout her childhood. It broke the conditioned sequence.
Lucas tore off the headphones and dropped to the floor.
Mara’s sniper fired.
The bullet struck Hale’s hand. The remote flew over the railing. Daniel caught Lucas as agents stormed the walkway.
Linda reached the remote first.
Everyone froze.
She looked at Daniel, then at the child.
For once, she made a choice that did not serve the trust.
She crushed the device beneath her heel.
The vest was safely removed. Hale was arrested. Lucas was taken for evaluation. Linda returned to custody without asking for credit.
At the hospital, Lucas spoke only once before falling asleep.
He looked at Emma and said, “The man with the ring told me you would come.”
“What man?” she asked.
May you like
Lucas pointed toward the dark window.
“He said he was waiting in the house where Daniel was born.”
