Chapter 14 - THE WEDDING TRAP

Kane descended the staircase with four armed men behind him.

He wore a decorated dress uniform.

To anyone entering the ballroom, he would have appeared honorable.

Amelia knew better.

“You should have stayed overseas, Captain,” Kane said.

“You should have stayed out of my family.”

Kane smiled.

“Your family invited me in long before you were born.”

Cross moved her hand toward her concealed weapon.

One of Kane’s men aimed at her.

“Major, please.”

Cross lowered her hand.

Vanessa stood beside Elena.

“What did you do to my daughter?”

Kane looked amused.

“Which one?”

Vanessa took a step forward.

Marcus emerged from behind the stage.

He held a pistol.

For a moment, Amelia could not tell whom he intended to shoot.

Then he aimed at Kane.

“Let them go.”

Kane laughed.

“Marcus Reed. Still pretending loyalty can erase cowardice.”

Marcus’s arm trembled.

“You promised Caroline would be safe.”

“And she was. Until she became curious.”

Elena’s face hardened.

Marcus looked at her.

“I tried to find you.”

“You worked for him.”

“To keep him from killing you.”

“You all have the same excuse.”

Amelia understood then.

Every adult in the room claimed protection.

Vanessa protected Sabrina by stealing from Amelia.

Marcus protected Vanessa by attacking anyone who found evidence.

Margaret protected Robert by delivering the poison that killed him.

Arthur protected his son by hiding bank crimes.

Their protection had destroyed the people they claimed to love.

Amelia looked at Kane.

“What do you want?”

“The ledger.”

“It is in military custody.”

“Copies exist.”

“Then killing us changes nothing.”

“It changes the testimony.”

Kane glanced toward the tables.

“The wedding is tomorrow. Two hundred guests. Political figures. Military officers. Bank executives. Imagine the scandal if the unstable younger daughter attacked her family during the rehearsal.”

Amelia understood the plan.

“You’ll frame me.”

“Your mother has spent years establishing your instability.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

Kane smiled at her.

“You performed that role beautifully.”

Elena moved slightly toward the lighting console.

Amelia noticed.

Kane did not.

Amelia continued speaking to hold his attention.

“Why kill Dad?”

“He was sentimental.”

“He discovered your theft.”

“He discovered the world did not operate according to his moral code.”

“You poisoned him.”

“Shaw arranged the medical details.”

“And Bell?”

“Also Shaw.”

“Where is Shaw now?”

Kane glanced at his watch.

“Preparing tomorrow’s final documents.”

“What documents?”

“The remaining trust assets will be transferred to Northstar Global after Sabrina’s wedding.”

Sabrina stared at him.

“My marriage?”

“Your marriage activates a family consolidation provision.”

Jonathan had not mentioned it.

Perhaps he did not know.

Kane continued.

“Once Hart and Vale assets merge, the ledger becomes irrelevant. Every illegal movement will appear to be an internal family transaction.”

Amelia looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

Kane laughed.

“She rarely does.”

Elena pressed her heel against a concealed floor switch.

The ballroom lights went out.

Emergency strobes flashed.

Amelia moved.

She struck the nearest gunman’s wrist, seized his weapon, and drove him into a table.

Cross pulled her pistol.

Marcus fired at Kane.

Kane dropped behind the stage.

Gunshots shattered chandeliers.

Vanessa dragged Sabrina behind the bridal table.

Elena ran toward the control room.

One of Kane’s men followed her.

Amelia fired once.

The man fell.

Cross disarmed another attacker near the staircase.

Marcus reached Kane behind the stage.

They struggled.

A gun fired.

Marcus staggered backward.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Kane raised the weapon toward Amelia.

Vanessa stepped between them.

“Adrian.”

He paused.

She held Robert’s West Point ring in her hand.

“You wanted this for thirty years.”

Kane stared at it.

“What did Robert hide inside?”

Vanessa smiled.

“The only thing you were never able to steal.”

She threw the ring toward the darkened stage.

Kane turned instinctively.

Amelia fired.

The bullet struck his shoulder.

Cross rushed forward and kicked away his gun.

Military police stormed through the side entrance.

Elena had unlocked the emergency doors and triggered a silent alarm connected to Cross’s team.

Kane lay on the floor, bleeding and laughing.

“You think this ends with me?”

Amelia stood over him.

“No.”

She looked toward the wedding decorations.

“It begins with you.”

Marcus collapsed near the stage.

Vanessa dropped beside him.

He looked at Elena.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena stood several feet away.

Her face remained unreadable.

Marcus reached toward her.

She did not take his hand.

He died with Vanessa holding him.

Kane was removed under armed guard.

The remaining gunmen were arrested.

The wedding rehearsal floor was covered in broken glass, blood, and white rose petals.

Sabrina looked at the ruined ballroom.

“The wedding is over.”

Jonathan entered through the emergency doors with Arthur Vale.

His father’s arm was in a sling, but he was walking.

Jonathan crossed the room and reached for Sabrina.

She stepped back.

“Did you know about the consolidation provision?”

“No.”

“Did your father?”

Arthur lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Jonathan turned toward him.

“You told me the marriage protected Sabrina.”

“It protected both families.”

“It protected the bank.”

Arthur said nothing.

Sabrina removed her engagement ring.

Jonathan’s face broke.

“I love you.”

“I believe you.”

She placed the ring in his hand.

“But love without truth is how all of this began.”

She walked away.

Vanessa sat beside Marcus’s body.

Elena watched her from across the room.

Amelia stood between her mother and the sister none of them had known.

The principal enemy had been captured.

The wedding scheme had failed.

The stolen trust could finally be restored.

But Major Cross approached Amelia with a sealed legal file.

“The court authorization will be ready tomorrow.”

“For Vanessa?”

“For everyone.”

Amelia looked toward her mother.

Cross lowered her voice.

“There is one complication.”

“What?”

“We found the trust’s original beneficiary page.”

“Am I listed?”

“Yes.”

“And Elena?”

“Yes.”

“Then what is the complication?”

Cross handed her the page.

May you like

There were not two beneficiary names.

There were three.
