Chapter 12 - Daniel’s Other Life

Emily watched the video alone.
She did not want Arthur present.
She did not want Margaret.
She did not want Julian.
For the first time since the memory card had been discovered, she asked Lena to leave the room.
Daniel appeared younger in the recording.
The date showed ten years earlier.
One year before he met Emily.
The woman beside him held an infant wrapped in a yellow blanket.
Her face remained turned away.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“My father believes this child died at birth.”
Emily paused the video.
Her hands shook.
She forced herself to continue.
“The medical record was falsified. The mother entered a protection program arranged by Caroline. If Arthur learns the child survived, he will use every resource he has to take control.”
Daniel looked toward the infant.
“I do not know what kind of father I am capable of being. I only know that distance is the safest thing I can offer.”
Emily felt grief turning into betrayal.
Daniel had a child.
Noah had a half sibling.
A living child Daniel never mentioned.
The woman finally spoke.
“You promised you would come with us.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“I cannot disappear.”
“You mean you will not.”
“If I leave, Arthur will search harder.”
“He will search anyway.”
The woman stood, carrying the baby out of frame.
Daniel remained seated.
After several seconds, he faced the camera.
“To my child, if you ever see this, I am sorry.”
The recording ended.
Emily sat in silence.
Daniel had built their marriage on a missing foundation.
Every memory shifted.
Every unexplained absence.
Every closed door.
Every moment she believed he was simply protecting her from family conflict.
Lena knocked before entering.
Emily closed the laptop.
“Did you recognize the woman?”
“No.”
“We enhanced one frame.”
Lena placed a photograph on the table.
The woman’s face was partially visible in a mirror.
Emily recognized her.
Not from Daniel’s past.
From her own.
Dr. Claire Donnelly.
A pediatric neurologist at Saint Catherine’s.
Claire had worked with Emily for six years. She had attended Daniel’s funeral. She had brought food to the house and spent an evening comforting Noah.
Emily stood.
“Where is she?”
“She left the hospital thirty minutes ago.”
“Find her.”
“Her home is empty.”
Emily called Claire.
The phone was disconnected.
She opened the staff directory.
Claire’s emergency contact was listed as her daughter.
Maya Donnelly.
Ten years old.
Emily stared at the age.
Daniel’s hidden child.
The hospital room door opened.
Noah sat in a wheelchair pushed by Tasha.
“You said I could leave my room if the doctor approved.”
Emily quickly closed the photograph.
“You should be resting.”
“I rested for hours.”
Tasha shrugged.
“He negotiated aggressively.”
Noah looked at the laptop.
“Was that Dad?”
Emily nodded.
“What did he say?”
She did not know how to answer.
“He had another child.”
Noah absorbed the words with surprising calm.
“A boy or girl?”
“A girl.”
“Do I know her?”
“I think you may have met her.”
“Who?”
“Maya Donnelly.”
Noah’s eyes widened.
“Maya from the hospital picnic?”
“Yes.”
“She pushed me into the fountain.”
“I remember.”
“She said it was an accident.”
“It was not.”
Noah thought for a moment.
“So she’s my sister?”
“Half sister.”
“Does she know?”
“I don’t know.”
He looked at Daniel’s frozen image on the screen.
“Dad lied a lot.”
Emily felt the brutal simplicity of the statement.
“Yes.”
“Was he bad?”
“No.”
The answer came instinctively.
Then she reconsidered.
“He made choices that hurt people. He also tried to stop worse things. People can do both.”
Noah looked down at his wrapped hands.
“Like Grandma?”
Emily hesitated.
“Your grandmother watched something terrible happen and did not stop it. Whatever good she may have done does not erase that.”
“And Dad?”
“The same rule applies.”
Noah nodded slowly.
“Does it apply to Grandpa?”
“Yes.”
Arthur had been returned to custody.
Charges connected to Noah’s endangerment, evidence tampering, fraud, and obstruction were being prepared.
Yet Victor remained free.
Caroline remained missing.
Rourke remained armed and dangerous.
Claire and Maya had vanished.
A nurse hurried into the room.
“Dr. Whitaker, there’s a situation downstairs.”
“What kind?”
“A woman entered the lobby asking for you. Security approached her, and she dropped a bag.”
Emily’s pulse quickened.
“What was inside?”
“Medical records and a gun.”
“Who is she?”
The nurse looked toward Noah.
“Dr. Claire Donnelly.”
Emily moved toward the door.
May you like
The nurse stopped her.
“She’s been shot.”
