Chapter 4 - The Nurse Who Refused to Look Away

Jason did not call an ambulance.
He drove me to a private clinic nearly two hours later, after Madison had cleaned the lake house and removed the documents.
During the journey, Jason rehearsed the story.
I had become emotional after discovering the affair.
I had screamed.
I had thrown a wineglass.
I had tripped while trying to leave.
“You should be grateful I’m helping you,” he said.
I stared through the window.
My entire body hurt, but my mind had become strangely clear.
I knew arguing would accomplish nothing.
So I nodded.
At the clinic, Jason stayed close while a doctor examined me. He answered questions before I could speak.
“She fell down several steps.”
“There were no steps in the room,” I said.
His hand settled on my shoulder.
“She’s confused.”
The doctor looked uncomfortable but did not challenge him.
A nurse named Elena Park entered to take me for imaging.
Jason tried to follow.
“Family members must remain here,” Elena said.
“I’m her husband.”
“And I’m the nurse responsible for her care.”
For the first time that night, someone stood between us.
Inside the imaging room, Elena closed the door.
Then she looked directly at me.
“You did not fall down stairs.”
It was not a question.
Tears filled my eyes.
I had held them back at the lake house, in the car, and during the examination.
But kindness broke what fear could not.
“He controls the clinic,” I whispered. “His company donated the equipment. The doctor knows him.”
Elena lowered her voice.
“Do you feel safe going home with him?”
“No.”
“Do you want help?”
“Yes.”
That single word saved my life.
Elena photographed my injuries according to hospital evidence procedures. She documented every inconsistency in Jason’s story. She collected my damaged dress and placed it in a sealed bag.
Then she handed me a small prepaid phone.
“My brother is a detective,” she said. “His number is already saved.”
“Jason will search me.”
“I’ll hide it inside your discharge folder.”
The clinic doctor returned twenty minutes later and announced that I could leave.
Elena intervened.
“She needs overnight observation.”
“That isn’t necessary,” the doctor said.
“It is according to her imaging results.”
The two argued in the hallway.
While Jason was distracted, Elena moved me to another room and locked the door.
I called Detective Samuel Park.
I told him everything.
He did not promise that Jason would be arrested immediately. He explained that we needed evidence strong enough to survive attacks from expensive attorneys.
“Can you safely pretend to cooperate?” he asked.
I looked at the locked door.
“For how long?”
“Long enough to get you out and preserve what he is trying to destroy.”
I thought about the backup camera at the lake house.
“My father installed a private security system,” I said. “Jason doesn’t know it exists.”
Detective Park went silent.
“Can anyone else access it?”
“Arthur Bell might know the code.”
Arthur answered on the second call.
When he heard my voice, he said, “Iris, where are you?”
“At a clinic.”
“What did he do?”
I started crying again.
Arthur did not ask me to repeat every detail.
He simply said, “Your father prepared for men like Jason.”
Within an hour, Arthur had contacted a digital security specialist. The lake house footage was copied from an encrypted server before Jason could discover it.
Detective Park arranged for officers to enter the clinic through a staff corridor.
Elena told Jason I needed more testing.
At 3:10 in the morning, wearing a hospital gown beneath a borrowed coat, I left through the laundry entrance.
I did not return to the mansion.
Jason woke the next morning believing I had disappeared with nothing.

In reality, I had escaped with the one thing he feared most.
Proof.
