Chapter 5 - The Medical Report

At the hospital, a nurse asked Skylar whether she felt safe returning home.

Skylar answered honestly.

“No.”

The word felt strange.

It also felt like a door opening.

Dr. Elena Ruiz examined her injuries and documented everything carefully. She explained the expected recovery process and asked Skylar to describe exactly what had occurred.

Skylar told the truth without minimizing it.

“My husband threw the coffee.”

“Was it accidental?”

“No.”

“Has he hurt you before?”

“Not like this.”

The doctor paused.

“That was not my question.”

Skylar looked down at her hands.

“He controls money. He interfered with my work. He forged my signature. He monitors where I go.”

Dr. Ruiz wrote additional notes.

“Physical harm is not the only harm that matters.”

After the examination, a hospital advocate helped Skylar contact the police.

She gave a full statement.

Mrs. Alvarez provided the audio recording and confirmed that Skylar had entered her apartment immediately after the incident. The building manager preserved hallway footage showing Skylar leaving the apartment while holding a towel to her face.

The footage also showed Derek opening the door several minutes later and carrying the broken cup pieces toward the trash room.

He had attempted to remove evidence.

By early afternoon, Mara arrived at the hospital.

She wore a dark blue suit and carried a black tablet.

When she saw Skylar, her professional expression softened.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be,” Skylar said. “Help me finish this.”

Mara sat beside her.

“The bank has confirmed the forged authorization. Your trust administrator has frozen all management changes. I also filed notice that Derek has no ownership interest in the apartment.”

“Can he stay there?”

“Temporarily, unless you revoke permission as the owner. Given today’s incident and the police report, we can request immediate protective conditions.”

Skylar nodded.

“Do it.”

Mara opened several documents on the tablet.

“There is something else. Derek submitted your apartment as his company’s registered executive address. He also listed improvements to the property as company assets.”

“What does that mean?”

“It may mean he used your home to inflate the company’s financial position.”

“Is that illegal?”

“It can be, particularly if false statements were made to lenders or investors.”

Skylar remembered the charity dinners, the applause, and the way Derek introduced the apartment as proof of his success.

“He built his reputation inside my home.”

“And now we document that.”

Skylar signed the divorce petition.

She signed the property notice.

She signed the request to preserve all financial records connected to Hale Coastal Development.

Each signature looked like her own.

Each final stroke leaned in the correct direction.

Mara studied her.

“There’s no requirement that you return today.”

“I need my things.”

“We can arrange officers to accompany you.”

“I also need him to understand that I’m not disappearing.”

Mara nodded slowly.

“Then we do this correctly.”

They contacted a moving company that specialized in urgent relocations. Skylar authorized the removal of her personal belongings, inherited furniture, family artwork, and work equipment.

She did not take anything purchased solely by Derek.

She did not need to.

The apartment itself was hers.

By late afternoon, the movers entered through the building’s service elevator while Derek was away meeting with investors.

Suzanne remained inside, shouting that nothing could be removed.

The building manager handed her a copy of the ownership record.

Suzanne called Derek repeatedly.

He did not answer until nearly everything had been packed.

Skylar waited in Mara’s office while the process unfolded.

At five thirty, the bank confirmed that Derek’s company accounts connected to the disputed loan application were being reviewed.

At six, the building canceled his digital access at Skylar’s written request.

At six fifteen, the police called.

They were ready to accompany her back.

Skylar looked at her medical report lying on Mara’s desk.

That morning, she had fled the apartment believing she might never feel powerful again.

Now the truth had been photographed, recorded, signed, and witnessed.

Derek had always relied on controlling the story.

This time, the story had evidence.
