Chapter 6 - Lunch for Eleanor

By the next afternoon, Julian had lost patience.

The hospital had placed a security restriction on Madeline’s room. Julian and Eleanor were allowed to speak to her only through the glass wall unless Madeline approved their entry.

Julian stood outside, pointing furiously.

“It’s only a fracture,” he shouted. “My mother still needs lunch.”

The doctor beside Madeline looked toward him in disbelief.

“She was struck by a car,” he said. “She cannot walk.”

Eleanor pressed one hand to her face.

“She is abandoning a helpless elderly woman.”

Madeline nearly smiled.

Even after the accident, after leaving her beside the road, and after trying to empty her account, they still expected her to serve them.

Their entitlement had grown so complete that neither understood how monstrous they sounded.

Julian struck the glass with his palm.

“You need to come home. We will hire someone to help with the stairs.”

“I am not coming home.”

Eleanor began crying.

“Where am I supposed to eat?”

The nurse looked at her.

“There is a cafeteria downstairs.”

Eleanor ignored her.

“Madeline, I have always treated you like a daughter.”

“No,” Madeline said. “You treated me like unpaid staff.”

Julian’s expression darkened.

“Stop embarrassing my mother.”

Madeline picked up the new phone Arthur had given her.

The banking application was already open.

Arthur stood at the far end of the room, outside Julian’s line of sight.

“Last chance,” Julian said. “Come home, apologize to my mother, and stop this ridiculous investigation.”

Madeline touched the screen.

“No. I’m ending access to the hundred-thousand-dollar account.”

Julian stared at her.

“You wouldn’t.”

She confirmed the security code.

The account froze instantly.

Julian’s phone began ringing.

His anger vanished as he read the alerts.

Madeline made another call.

“Arthur, begin the audit of Julian’s company file.”

That was the moment the balance of power changed.

Julian pushed into the room and demanded that she reverse the decision. Security arrived. Madeline revealed that the police had located traffic camera footage showing the company vehicle striking her.

Julian denied everything.

Eleanor backed away.

Then Detective Lena Ortiz entered.

She carried a clear evidence bag containing Madeline’s original phone.

“We found this inside Mr. Carter’s office,” the detective said.

Julian stopped speaking.

The phone contained a recording.

When Julian used Madeline’s thumb to unlock it beside the road, he accidentally activated the voice assistant. The device recorded several minutes of sound before he turned it off.

The audio captured rain, Julian’s breathing, and Eleanor’s voice from inside the car.

It also captured Julian saying, “Once the trust transfers, we call the ambulance.”

Eleanor replied, “And if she wakes up?”

Julian’s answer was quiet but clear.

“Then we say she stepped into traffic.”

The doctor turned away in disgust.

Julian looked at Madeline.

For the first time, he appeared to understand that she no longer belonged to the version of the marriage he controlled.

Madeline handed the divorce papers to the security officer.

Detective Ortiz stepped forward.

“Julian Carter, you need to come with us.”
