Chapter 4 - The Room Beneath the Hospital

Julian had been free for eleven minutes when the first message arrived.
Clara stood in Alexander's library while the phone vibrated on the table.
The number was hidden.
The message contained only a photograph.
Clara opened it.
A woman sat tied to a chair in a dark room.
Her hair was streaked with gray.
Blood ran from her temple.
A strip of tape covered her mouth.
But Clara recognized her immediately.
Miriam.
Alive.
Beneath the photograph were six words.
COME ALONE OR SHE DIES AGAIN.
Clara's knees weakened.
Alexander took the phone from her.
"Trace it."
His security officer connected the device to a computer.
Clara stared at Miriam's face.
The woman who had raised her.
The woman whose empty coffin she had buried.
The woman Julian had hidden from her for four years.
"This could be an old photograph," Alexander said.
"It isn't."
"How can you know?"
Clara pointed toward Miriam's wrist.
A pale scar crossed the skin beneath the rope.
"Miriam burned herself when I was eleven. She pulled a pan off the stove before it fell on me."
Alexander studied the image.
Clara took the phone back.
"What does Julian want?"
"Control."
"He already had that."
"Not anymore."
The technician looked up.
"The message bounced through multiple servers, but the final signal came from Bennett Memorial Hospital."
Clara looked at the handwritten note on the back of Miriam's surveillance photograph.
Tomorrow.
11:30 p.m.
Sublevel 3.
The message had not been an invitation for tomorrow.
It had been a warning for tonight.
Alexander checked his watch.
11:07 p.m.
"We have twenty-three minutes."
Clara headed toward the door.
Alexander blocked her.
"You are not going."
"He said he would kill her."
"He may kill her whether you go or not."
"Then I cannot abandon her."
"You will not help Miriam by walking into Julian's trap."
Clara looked at the wall of photographs.
"You watched me for six years because you were afraid someone would kill me."
"Yes."
"You kept secrets because you believed I couldn't survive the truth."
"Yes."
"And where did that leave me?"
Alexander said nothing.
"It left me married to the man who imprisoned her."
She pushed past him.
"This time, I decide what happens to me."
Alexander followed her.
"You don't know what is beneath that hospital."
"Neither do you."
"I know enough."
Clara stopped at the elevator.
"Then tell me."
Alexander's jaw tightened.
"The hospital was built over a private research facility owned by Vale Biogenics."
"Your company?"
"My daughter's company."
Clara stared at him.
"My mother's?"
"Her name was Evelyn."
The elevator doors opened.
Neither moved.
Alexander continued.
"Evelyn believed trauma could be inherited through behavioral conditioning. She studied memory, fear responses, and identity formation."
Clara felt uneasy.
"On patients?"
"Initially, volunteers."
"Initially?"
"The project changed after she disappeared."
"Changed how?"
"Children were brought into the program."
Clara's stomach turned.
"Why would Julian's family be involved?"
"The Bennetts financed the facility."
"Why?"
"Because they did not care whether the research healed trauma."
Alexander's voice hardened.
"They wanted to know whether it could create obedience."
Clara thought of Julian's rules.
Do not question him in public.
Do not keep private accounts.
Do not speak to former friends.
Do not lock doors.
Do not leave without telling him.
She had always believed his control had grown slowly.
What if it had been planned long before their marriage?
She stepped into the elevator.
"Take me to the hospital."
Alexander entered beside her.
They traveled with six security officers in two unmarked vehicles.
Bennett Memorial Hospital appeared almost peaceful beneath the night sky.
Emergency room lights glowed near the front entrance.
Ambulances came and went.
No one passing the building would have imagined a hidden level existed beneath it.
Alexander's team entered through an underground parking garage.
The elevator panel displayed B2 as the lowest floor.
A security officer used the silver key against an unmarked section beneath the buttons.
A hidden light turned blue.
The panel opened.
A new button appeared.
B3.
Clara stared at the key.
"Miriam sent it because she wanted us to enter."
"Or someone wanted us to think she did," Alexander said.
The elevator descended.
The temperature dropped.
When the doors opened, Clara smelled disinfectant and rust.
A narrow corridor extended beneath flickering lights.
The walls were painted pale green.
Old security cameras followed them as they moved.
Several doors stood open.
Inside were abandoned examination rooms.
Small beds.
Observation windows.
Restraint straps.
Children's drawings still hung on one wall.
Most showed houses.
Some showed fire.
One drawing showed a little girl standing between two families.
Clara moved toward it.
The child had yellow hair.
One family stood beneath the name VALE.
The other stood beneath the name BENNETT.
A black line had been drawn through the girl's face.
Clara touched the paper.
A sharp headache struck behind her eyes.
A memory surfaced.
A bright room.
A man asking her to choose between two photographs.
Miriam shouting beyond a glass wall.
Clara crying.
A needle entering her arm.
She stumbled.
Alexander caught her.
"What happened?"
"I've been here."
"That isn't possible."
"I remember that room."
"Clara, you were taken from my home when you were three."
"I remember this."
A speaker crackled above them.
Julian's voice filled the corridor.
"Welcome back, sweetheart."
Security officers raised their weapons.
Clara looked toward the camera.
"Where is Miriam?"
"Closer than you think."
"Let her go."
"Walk to the end of the corridor."
Alexander signaled for two officers to search the adjoining rooms.
Julian laughed through the speaker.
"Send them wherever you like. The building was designed with more than one kind of wall."
Clara continued forward.
At the end of the corridor, they found a circular chamber.
A glass room stood in the center.
Miriam sat tied to the chair inside.
Her eyes widened when she saw Clara.
Clara ran toward her.
Alexander grabbed her before she reached the door.
"Wait."
Wires surrounded the glass frame.
A pressure sensor had been placed beneath the floor.
Julian's voice returned.
"Always cautious, Alexander."
"Come out," Alexander said.
"You know I prefer working through other people."
Clara stared at Miriam.
"I'm here."
Miriam shook her head violently.
She tried to speak through the tape.
A red digital clock lit above the chamber.
05:00.
The countdown began.
Julian spoke again.
"The room will fill with gas in five minutes."
Clara's breath caught.
"Stop it."
"There's a control station inside the observation room."
A light turned on behind a glass wall to their left.
Two red buttons and one black button sat on a metal panel.
"One red button opens Miriam's chamber."
"And the other?" Alexander asked.
"Releases the gas immediately."
Clara looked at the identical buttons.
"And the black one?"
Julian chuckled.
"The black button unlocks the archive."
"What archive?"
"The one containing everything your mother learned about you."
Alexander looked toward the ceiling camera.
"You expect her to choose between Miriam and the truth."
"No."
Julian's voice became colder.
"I expect Clara to show us what she was trained to choose."
The clock reached 04:21.
Miriam suddenly kicked the chair backward.
It crashed against the glass.
The tape loosened from her mouth.
She screamed one sentence.
"Clara, don't open the door!"
A gunshot cracked inside the chamber.
Blood appeared across Miriam's blouse.
Clara screamed.
The lights went out.
When the emergency lights flickered on, the chair was empty.
Only the ropes remained.
No Miriam.
No body.
No blood on the floor.
The stain had vanished with her.
A hidden panel slid open behind the observation room.
Someone ran into the darkness.
Alexander's officers pursued.
Clara entered the control room.
The countdown continued.
03:48.
All three buttons remained illuminated.
A monitor turned on.
Julian appeared on the screen.
He stood in an unknown room, holding the silver necklace Clara had worn on her wedding day.
"That necklace belonged to your mother."
Clara stared at him.
"Where is Miriam?"
"She was never in the chamber."
"Then who was I looking at?"
"A recording."
"The blood?"
"Projection."
Clara's fear became rage.
"Why are you doing this?"
Julian smiled.
"Because Alexander told you the Bennetts wanted to create obedience."
He leaned closer to the camera.
"He forgot to tell you who the first successful subject was."
The screen changed.
Old footage appeared.
A little girl sat inside the circular chamber.
Electrodes covered her head.
A younger Miriam stood behind the glass, crying.
A young Alexander argued with a doctor.
The child turned toward the camera.
Clara recognized her own face.
A label appeared beneath the footage.
SUBJECT C-20.
Clara stepped backward.
Julian's voice continued.
"Twenty dollars wasn't a joke, Clara."
"It was your original price."
The clock reached 03:02.
Alexander entered the control room and saw the footage.
His face collapsed.
Clara turned toward him.
"What does C-20 mean?"
Alexander could not answer.
Julian did.
"Candidate Twenty."
The screen displayed a list of names.
Nineteen were marked DECEASED.
The twentieth carried Clara's childhood photograph.
Status: TRANSFERRED.
Destination: BENNETT FAMILY.
Clara looked at Alexander.
"You gave me to them."
"No."
"You signed the document."
"My signature was forged."
Julian laughed.
"Was it?"
The screen zoomed in on a contract.
Alexander Vale's signature appeared at the bottom.
Beside it was another name.
Evelyn Vale.
Clara's mother.
Her own mother had approved the transfer.
The black archive button began flashing.
02:31.
Julian whispered through the speaker.
"Press it."
"Everything you believe about your mother is a lie."
Clara looked at the two red buttons.
One allegedly saved Miriam.
One allegedly killed her.
The black button opened the archive.
Alexander reached toward the panel.
Clara stopped him.
"No more decisions for me."
She examined the wiring beneath the controls.
The buttons were designed to create fear.
To force a choice.
That was what Julian expected.
What the program had always expected.
Choose the person.
Choose the truth.
Accept the rules.
Clara grabbed a metal chair and slammed it into the control panel.
Sparks exploded.
Alexander pulled her back.
The monitor flickered.
The countdown froze at 01:47.
Every locked door in the corridor opened simultaneously.
Alarms began ringing.
Julian's smile disappeared.
"What did you do?"
Clara struck the panel again.
"I refused the test."
The monitor went black.
A hidden door opened behind them.
Miriam fell through it.
This time she was real.
Her wrists were bruised.
Her face was bleeding.
But she was alive.
Clara dropped beside her.
"Miriam."
Miriam clutched Clara's hand.
"We have to leave."
"Where is Julian?"
"He was never here."
"Then who brought you?"
Miriam looked toward Alexander.
Her fear deepened.
"Not Julian."
A heavy door closed at the end of the corridor.
The lights turned red.
Alexander's security officers shouted over their radios.
Someone had sealed the entire sublevel.
Miriam pulled Clara closer.
"The man who controls this place has been waiting for you since you were a child."
"Who?"
Miriam's lips trembled.
Before she could answer, a voice came through the speakers.
It was not Julian.
It was a woman's voice.
Calm.
Familiar.
Clara had heard it only in dreams.
"Hello, Candidate Twenty."
Clara slowly looked toward the ceiling.
The voice continued.
"You took much longer to come home than I expected."
Miriam began to cry.
Clara whispered the question she was suddenly afraid to ask.
"Mother?"
The woman laughed softly.
Then every screen in the facility displayed the same live image.
A beautiful older woman sat in a white room.
A burn scar covered one side of her face.
May you like
She wore Clara's wedding necklace.
And behind her, tied to another chair, sat Julian Bennett.
