Chapter 13 - The Wreck of the Mireille

Avery and Rowan descended in a two-person submersible while Ethan tracked the unknown vessel above.
The ocean swallowed daylight within minutes. At two miles deep, the Mireille emerged from darkness, its broken hull resting on the seabed like the skeleton of an animal too large to bury. Avery's scar throbbed as if the cable still tightened around it.
Rowan noticed. "We can turn back."
"No."
"That is not bravery."
"I know."
They guided the submersible toward the ruptured cargo hold. Fresh tool marks surrounded a hatch beneath the wreck. The brass key opened an external release, and the sisters entered a sealed compartment that had survived the explosion.
Inside, beneath layers of silt, stood the Lighthouse console.
Two biometric plates waited side by side.
Avery placed her forearm against one. Rowan pressed her throat scar to the other. The console recognized them as Child A and Subject B.
A woman's face appeared on the screen.
Caroline Bennett was older, thinner, and unmistakably alive.
The recording had been made only eleven days earlier.
"Avery. Rowan. I owe you truth that may not earn forgiveness."
Caroline explained that after her staged death, she infiltrated the remaining First Light network under the stolen Admiral Gray identity. She believed she could destroy it from within. Instead, every successful sabotage strengthened her authority. She began approving operations she called necessary sacrifices. Over time she became indistinguishable from the enemy she intended to defeat.
Voss eventually discovered her identity and split the Consortium. One faction followed him. Another followed Caroline. The inheritance crisis began because both factions wanted control of Lighthouse.
"Lighthouse can expose every member," Caroline said. "It can also seize their financial systems, defense platforms, and covert assets. In the wrong hands it is a dictatorship without a flag. In mine, it became a temptation I no longer trust myself to resist."
She asked her daughters to destroy it.
Before the recording ended, alarms sounded inside the wreck.
The unknown vessel had deployed divers.
Avery copied the evidence while Rowan armed the console's physical purge. Armed figures cut through the outer hatch. Their helmets bore no insignia.
Gordon arrived unexpectedly in a second submersible with Matthew. He had overridden mission orders.
"You said come alone," Avery snapped over comms.
"Your mother taught me not to obey bad orders," Gordon replied.
A firefight erupted in the flooded approach tunnel. Matthew covered the sisters while Gordon reached the Lighthouse power junction. One attacker removed his helmet.
Senator Reed.
He had faked unconsciousness during the raid and remained a council leader. Reed offered Madison's safety in exchange for the console.
"Madison is on the ship," Gordon said.
"Not anymore."
Above them, Ethan reported that Madison had vanished from secure quarters.
Reed smiled. "The heir has accepted her inheritance."
Avery refused to believe it until Madison's voice entered the channel.
"Avery, do not destroy Lighthouse. Mom is alive aboard the other vessel. They will kill her."
The purge countdown showed ninety seconds.
Rowan reached for the abort control. Avery stopped her.
"This is the choice they always force," Avery said. "Save one person or save everyone they can hurt."
Gordon looked at the console, then at the power cables. "There may be a third choice."
He disconnected the physical relay and carried it toward the flooded tunnel.
"Dad, what are you doing?" Avery asked.
"Something I should have done thirty years ago."
He sealed himself inside the outer compartment with Reed and the attacking divers, then triggered the relay overload.
The blast collapsed the tunnel.
Lighthouse completed its data copy but lost control access. The Consortium's names transmitted to Naomi's secure servers while the operational commands were destroyed.
Gordon's life signal disappeared.
Avery pressed both hands against the sealed hatch, shouting for him though she knew he could not answer.
Then Matthew found an emergency beacon moving away from the wreck.
One submersible had escaped the collapse.
Its pilot identity code belonged to Gordon Bennett.

But the passenger manifest listed Senator Reed.
Inside the submersible, Rowan confessed that she once received an order to kill Avery. It came six years earlier, after Avery disrupted a Meridian payment route in Prague. Rowan traveled to Maine and watched her through a rifle scope as she bought coffee at the harbor kiosk. Avery had paused to help an elderly fisherman gather spilled coins. The gesture contradicted everything Voss had taught Rowan about the chosen sister who had benefited from her abandonment. Rowan lowered the weapon and sent a false report claiming weather made the shot impossible. Avery listened without turning from the controls. She could not offer immediate absolution, but she reached across the narrow cabin and placed her hand palm-up between them. Rowan rested her fingers there. The contact lasted only seconds. At the ocean floor, surrounded by the machinery built to divide them, it was enough.
