Chapter 7 - The Wedding Built on a Lie

The Whitmore estate looked like a palace.
White roses covered the balconies. Crystal decorations hung from the trees. A glass aisle stretched across the lawn toward an altar overlooking the ocean.
Guests arrived in luxury cars and helicopters.
Vivian moved through the crowd like a queen inspecting her kingdom.
She wore silver and carried Julian’s grandmother’s ring on a chain beneath her dress. She had kept it for five years as a symbol of victory.
Julian arrived shortly before the ceremony.
He did not greet her.
“Is Clara coming?” he asked.
Vivian smiled for the photographers.
“I believe she accepted.”
“With whom?”
“I’m not responsible for her social arrangements.”
“You know exactly who she’s bringing.”
“Do not create a scene.”
Julian stepped closer.
“If those children are mine, you created this scene five years ago.”
Vivian’s smile remained fixed.
“Lower your voice.”
“Where are the letters?”
Her eyes shifted.
That small movement confirmed everything.
“You kept them.”
“I will discuss this after the wedding.”
“There may not be a wedding.”
Vivian’s fingers closed around his arm.
“Hundreds of people are watching. Investors are here. The Lancaster family is here. You will not humiliate us.”
Julian pulled away.
“You stopped being part of ‘us’ when you stole my children from me.”
Vivian’s face hardened.
“You don’t know those children.”
“Whose fault is that?”
Before she could answer, music began.
Brooke appeared at the far end of the glass aisle.
The guests stood.
She looked beautiful in her lace gown, but her expression was calm rather than joyful.
Julian watched her approach with guilt pressing against his chest.
When she reached the altar, she placed her bouquet into her sister’s hands.
The officiant began speaking.
Vivian relaxed slightly.
She believed the ceremony itself would trap them. Once the vows began, Julian would continue rather than cause a scandal.
Then a distant engine interrupted the music.
Several guests looked upward.
A white jet approached the private airfield.
The aircraft carried the Altair Aviation emblem.
A business reporter near the front recognized it.
“That’s Clara Bennett’s company,” he said.
Whispers spread immediately.
Vivian’s face became rigid.
The jet landed.
Instead of continuing the ceremony, Brooke turned toward it.
“Should we wait?” the officiant asked nervously.
“Yes,” Brooke said.
Vivian stepped forward.
“No. Continue.”
Brooke looked directly at her.
“This is my wedding, Vivian.”
The words were quiet.
They silenced everyone near the altar.
The jet rolled to a stop.
Ground staff positioned a staircase decorated with flowers left from the wedding’s aviation-themed entrance display. The red carpet stretched from the runway toward the lawn.
The door opened.
Clara appeared.
Julian forgot how to breathe.
She looked older than the woman he remembered, but not diminished. She carried herself with the confidence of someone who had learned to stand without anyone beside her.
For one dangerous second, Julian saw the life they might have had.
Then the triplets stepped into view.
No investigation could prepare him for the sight of them moving, speaking and holding Clara’s hands.
They were not photographs.
They were his children.
Noah looked serious.
Eli waved at the crowd.
Mia held the railing carefully.
Julian’s legs nearly failed beneath him.
Brooke placed a hand near his elbow, steadying him.
“Go,” she whispered.
He did not move.
Fear held him in place.
What right did he have to approach children who had lived four years without him?
The triplets solved the problem.
They ran toward him.
May you like
And under the eyes of hundreds of wedding guests, the truth finally reached the man Vivian had hidden it from.
