Chapter 8 - The Family Meeting

Every adult who had witnessed the birthday incident was invited.

Most came.

Madeline entered the conference room wearing a cream suit and carrying a leather handbag. She looked composed until she saw the number of relatives seated around the table.

Then she noticed the laboratory documents.

Her confidence slipped.

“What is this?” she asked.

Brandon stood at the far end of the room.

“This is the conversation you wanted to have in front of the family.”

“I never wanted a public spectacle.”

Victoria stared at her.

“You kicked cake out of a child’s hands during your birthday party.”

“I was emotional.”

“You planned it,” I said. “You had already altered the report.”

Madeline looked at Samuel.

“I don’t appreciate being accused without evidence.”

Samuel slid the original laboratory request across the table.

“Your signature is on the application.”

Her expression changed.

Brandon placed the official paternity result beside it.

“Luke is my biological son.”

A murmur passed through the room.

Madeline did not look at the result.

Instead, she looked at Brandon.

“Tests can be wrong.”

“You trusted one when it allowed you to attack Claire.”

“That is different.”

“How?”

She opened her mouth but found no answer.

Brandon held up the report she had circulated.

“You changed the first page. You made the family believe the laboratory tested me.”

“I was protecting you.”

“No. You were protecting yourself.”

Several relatives looked between them.

Madeline gripped the back of a chair.

“Brandon, this is not the place.”

“It became the place when you humiliated my son in front of everyone here.”

Her face reddened.

“You don’t understand what I was facing.”

“I understand exactly. You tested Luke against Dad. When the result showed they weren’t related, you knew why.”

Victoria slowly stood.

“Mom?”

Madeline closed her eyes.

The truth entered the room before she spoke it.

“Richard was not Brandon’s biological father,” she said.

No one moved.

She immediately began explaining.

Her marriage had been struggling. She had been lonely. It happened once. Richard forgave her. She had spent decades terrified that the family would discover it.

“When I received that result,” she said, “I panicked.”

“So you blamed Claire,” Victoria said.

“I thought it was possible.”

“You did not ask,” I replied. “You did not request a proper test. You changed the document and attacked a child.”

“I never meant for him to have an asthma episode.”

“You meant for him to hear that he did not belong.”

Madeline’s voice cracked.

“I was afraid of losing everything.”

Brandon removed Richard’s letter.

“You were afraid people would judge you, so you made them judge my wife and my four-year-old son.”

He read the paragraph about Madeline controlling the story when frightened.

By the time he finished, she was crying.

For once, her tears did not control the room.

Samuel explained that the other trustees had voted to remove her immediately. She could challenge the decision, but doing so would bring the altered report and laboratory records into court.

Madeline stared at him.

“You would publicly disgrace me?”

Brandon answered.

“You publicly disgraced Luke.”

She signed the resignation.

Then she turned toward me.

“I am sorry.”

I believed she regretted being exposed.

I was not yet convinced she regretted what she had done.

“An apology is not a key to our house,” I said. “You will have no contact with Luke unless we decide it is safe.”

“I’m his grandmother.”

Brandon looked at her with the same calm expression Richard had worn in family photographs.

May you like

“No,” he said. “That is a title you kicked away.”
