Chapter 10 - What Happened on September 14

Evelyn refused to answer the question by telephone.

She requested a private meeting at the Bennett estate.

Detective Ellis objected, but Evelyn insisted the truth depended on documents hidden inside the family chapel. The chapel stood beyond the orchard and had been closed since Grandmother Ruth’s funeral.

Claire agreed to meet under police supervision.

Daniel remained beside her.

Paige came as well.

“I was there that night,” Paige said while they crossed the orchard path.

Claire stopped.

“You were nineteen.”

“I followed Dad to the lake.”

“Why have you never said this?”

“I thought I caused what happened.”

Evelyn waited inside the chapel.

She had changed since the wedding. Without the company office, assistants, and controlled appearances, she seemed smaller.

A wooden box rested on the altar.

“You both deserve the truth,” she said.

Claire remained near the door.

“We deserved it twelve years ago.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn opened the box.

Inside were letters written by Thomas, the original Gideon Vale agreement, and a small voice recorder.

“September 14 was not the night your father disappeared,” Evelyn said. “It was the night he tried to kill Gideon Vale.”

Paige stared at her.

“No.”

“He learned Gideon had ordered an attack against Claire.”

Claire’s pulse quickened.

“What attack?”

“A staged allergic reaction at a charity dinner.”

The similarity to the wedding made the chapel feel colder.

“Dad stopped it,” Claire said.

“He discovered the plan before you arrived. He confronted Gideon at the lake. Martin Rusk was there.”

Evelyn touched the recorder.

“Thomas believed Rusk was helping him collect evidence. Rusk was actually working for Gideon.”

Daniel looked toward the chapel windows.

“What happened during the confrontation?”

“Thomas attacked Gideon. Rusk attempted to stop him. A gun was fired.”

“Who was shot?” Paige asked.

“No one. The bullet struck the boat.”

Claire remembered the damaged boat recovered at sea.

“The hole investigators believed came from an accident.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Thomas forced Gideon onto the boat. He intended to make him confess while recording everything. Rusk followed them.”

“And you?”

“I remained onshore with Paige.”

Paige’s face changed.

“I saw someone fall into the water.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“I do not know.”

“You told me it was Dad.”

“I needed you to remain silent.”

Claire stepped closer to the altar.

“Did the boat return?”

“Hours later. Thomas came back alone.”

“So he survived.”

“He said Gideon and Rusk had escaped using another vessel. He believed the police were compromised. We staged his disappearance that night.”

“What happened after he left the country?”

“For years, he sent evidence. Then his messages changed.”

“How?”

“He became obsessed. He stopped talking about exposing Gideon and began talking about taking the company for himself.”

Claire felt Daniel watching her.

“Did Dad create Marrow Lane?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did he contact you before the wedding?”

“A man using his private code contacted me.”

“Did you believe it was him?”

“I wanted to.”

Evelyn handed Claire the recorder.

“This arrived one week before your engagement.”

Claire pressed play.

Thomas’s voice filled the chapel.

“Evie, Claire cannot marry Daniel Reed. Reed’s father helped Gideon hide the original option agreement. If Claire marries him, the two families will control everything Thomas Bennett sacrificed to protect.”

Daniel stared at the recorder.

“My father never worked for Gideon Vale.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

“Thomas believed otherwise.”

Claire stopped the recording.

“Why did you hide this?”

“Because I investigated Daniel’s father. I found no connection.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“You knew the accusation was false.”

“I believed someone was using Thomas’s voice to manipulate me.”

“But you still joined the plan.”

“I thought postponing the wedding would give me time to identify them.”

Claire placed the recorder on the altar.

“You keep describing betrayal as a delay.”

Evelyn did not defend herself.

Paige opened one of Thomas’s letters.

A photograph slipped onto the floor.

Daniel picked it up.

It showed Martin Rusk at a restaurant table with another man.

The second man was Daniel’s father.

Daniel stared at the image.

Claire moved closer.

“When was this taken?”

The date was written on the back.

One month before Daniel’s father died.

Daniel turned the photograph over again, searching for evidence of alteration.

“It could be fake.”

“It could,” Claire said.

He looked at her.

For the first time since the wedding, uncertainty passed between them.

Not distrust.

But the knowledge that someone had built their plan from secrets neither family fully understood.

Detective Ellis entered the chapel.

“We traced the signal from the hotel surveillance room.”

“Where?” Claire asked.

“It bounced through several locations, but the final active device is nearby.”

“How nearby?”

Ellis looked toward the orchard.

“Inside this property.”

Police officers began searching the estate.

The old house.

The staff buildings.

The packing rooms.

The lake road.

Claire, Daniel, Paige, and Evelyn remained in the chapel.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then Claire’s phone rang.

The screen displayed Daniel’s name.

Daniel stood beside her, holding his own phone.

Neither device was calling.

Claire answered.

A man breathed softly on the other end.

“Claire?”

Her entire body became still.

She knew the voice.

It was older and weaker than she remembered, but it carried the same gentle pause after her name.

“Dad?”

Evelyn gripped the edge of the altar.

Paige covered her mouth.

Daniel signaled Detective Ellis to trace the call.

The man continued.

“You survived the flowers.”

Claire’s relief turned to anger.

“You knew about them.”

“I tried to stop the order.”

“You were in the bridal room.”

“No.”

“We saw you.”

“You saw the man who took my face.”

“Who?”

“Martin.”

Martin Rusk.

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Where are you?”

“Closer than they think.”

“Why did you let us believe you were dead?”

“To keep you alive.”

“That answer is not enough.”

“I know.”

“Did you create Marrow Lane?”

“No.”

“Did you send Paige the messages?”

“No.”

“Did you tell Mom to stop the wedding?”

A long silence followed.

“I warned her about Daniel.”

Daniel moved closer to the phone.

“Why?”

“Because his father was involved in the night I disappeared.”

“My father died without ever mentioning you.”

“Ask Daniel where his father’s final case files went.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

Claire noticed.

“What case files?” she asked.

Daniel did not answer immediately.

The man on the telephone gave a quiet, humorless laugh.

“He never told you.”

“Tell me where you are.”

“Not until I know which one of you Martin controls.”

“Martin is alive?”

“He was alive at the wedding.”

“Is he the man in the video?”

“Yes.”

“Then why does he look like you?”

“Because he has spent twelve years preparing to replace me.”

A police officer shouted outside.

Lights moved across the orchard.

Detective Ellis received a message and looked toward the chapel doors.

“The signal is coming from beneath us.”

Everyone looked down.

The chapel had no basement.

At least, none that Claire knew about.

Evelyn stared at the altar.

Her face filled with recognition.

“What is beneath the chapel?” Daniel asked.

Evelyn stepped backward.

“An old family tunnel.”

“Where does it lead?”

“To the lake.”

A heavy sound echoed below the stone floor.

The call remained connected.

Claire heard the man’s breathing.

Then another voice spoke behind him.

“Give me the phone, Thomas.”

Claire recognized the second voice from the recovered wedding footage.

Martin Rusk.

A struggle sounded through the speaker.

The line cut off.

Detective Ellis ordered officers toward the tunnel entrance.

Daniel caught Claire’s arm before she could follow.

“You are staying here.”

“My father is down there.”

“So is the man who tried to kill you.”

A gunshot echoed beneath the chapel.

Paige screamed.

Dust fell from the stone floor.

The old trapdoor behind the altar lifted several inches.

A hand appeared through the opening.

It wore Grandmother Ruth’s gold watch.

The same watch Evelyn had been wearing on the morning of the wedding.

Evelyn looked at her bare wrist.

“I lost that watch in the bridal room.”

The trapdoor opened wider.

A wounded man climbed slowly into the chapel, but the shadows concealed his face.

Claire stepped forward.

“Dad?”

The man raised his head.

He looked exactly like Thomas Bennett.

Then someone beneath the floor called out in the same voice.

“Claire, don’t trust him.”

Everyone froze.

The man inside the chapel reached into his coat.

Daniel moved in front of Claire.

Detective Ellis raised her weapon.

The second man below the floor shouted again.

“He is Martin.”

The man in the chapel smiled.

“No,” he said. “I’m the one who came back to save her.”

He removed an envelope from his coat and placed it on the altar.

Claire’s name was written across the front.

Beneath it were five words.

The wedding was only the beginning.
