Chapter 6 - The Night Before the BirthMadison went into labor three weeks early.

Diane called Claire at 2:08 a.m.
“We’re going to St. Anne’s Hospital,” she said. “Bring your company card. Madison’s insurance might not cover a private room.”
Claire sat up beside Kevin.
He was already awake.
Too awake.
“I’ll meet you there,” Claire said.
Kevin climbed out of bed immediately.
“I’ll drive.”
Claire watched him dress with trembling hands.
He did not ask whether Madison was safe. He already seemed to know more than Diane had said.
At the hospital, Kevin disappeared twice.
The first time, he claimed he was getting coffee.
The second time, he said he needed to take a work call.
A security camera later showed him entering the restricted family corridor and speaking to Madison before the delivery.
Claire remained in the waiting area beside Diane.
Her mother complained about the chairs, the hospital staff, and the possibility that Madison might not receive the largest room.
“You should make a donation,” Diane said. “Hospitals treat important families differently.”
“This is a hospital, not a hotel.”
“Your sister is frightened.”
“So am I.”
Diane looked at her dismissively. “This isn’t about you.”
Claire almost laughed.
Nothing in their family had ever been allowed to be about her—not even her own betrayal.
After several hours, a nurse announced that Madison had delivered a healthy baby boy.
Diane cried with joy.
Kevin covered his face, pretending to be overwhelmed as an uncle.
Claire saw the truth in the way his shoulders shook.
The child was his.
She felt no anger toward the baby.
He was innocent.
He had entered the world surrounded by adults who had built his future on deception.
Claire quietly asked a nurse whether Madison and the baby were stable. Once reassured, she stepped away and called Daniel.
“The baby has been born.”
“We’re ready whenever you are.”
“Has the investigator confirmed the final transfers?”
“Yes. Kevin attempted a second withdrawal last night. Diane also moved funds from her advisory account into the Northvale account.”
“And Madison?”
“She signed the coastal property documents digitally.”
Claire looked through the waiting-room window at the pale morning sky.
“Prepare everything.”
“Do you want security present?”
“Yes.”
“Where will you be?”
“I’m going home to collect my personal documents.”
Kevin returned from the corridor.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“To shower and change.”
“You should stay. Madison needs family.”
Claire held his gaze.
“Does she?”
Kevin looked away first.
At home, Claire packed one suitcase.
She removed her passport, her father’s letters, several pieces of jewelry, and a framed photograph of Thomas standing beside her on the day she became chief operating officer.
Then she walked through every room.
The kitchen where Kevin had promised to love her through every disappointment.
The dining room where her mother had insulted her while eating meals Claire paid for.
The guest room where Madison had stayed whenever her life collapsed.
Claire left her house key on the counter.
Before departing, she scheduled the transfer of the house into a protected legal entity solely under her control. The property had been purchased largely with inherited funds, and Daniel had already prepared the documentation.
Kevin would not be able to sell it.
He would not even be allowed to remain there once the temporary court order was served.
Claire returned to the hospital carrying a gift bag.
Inside was a baby blanket she had purchased before learning the truth.
She still intended to give it to the child.

Then she reached the slightly open door and heard Kevin say the words that destroyed the last remaining doubt.
“She doesn’t know anything. At least she still has money.”
