Chapter 15 - The Baby No One Knew Existed

Three months after the sentencing, Clara stood in the restored nursery and watched morning light move across the floor.
The shattered glass had been removed long ago. The carpet had been replaced. The damaged crib was gone. Julian wanted to redesign the entire room, but Clara kept one thing unchanged: the camera.
It no longer connected to Gabriel's network or the Vale security system. Ruiz's technicians rebuilt it from the hardware outward. Only Clara and Julian possessed access.
The camera was no longer a hidden witness controlled by someone else. It was a tool they had chosen.
Noah slept beneath it, one hand open beside his face.
Julian entered carrying coffee and a folder from Ruiz.
"You did not sleep," Clara said.
"Neither did you."
The folder contained information about the second child in the Saint Orison list. Investigators had traced medical payments from one of Marcus's secret accounts to a woman named Elena Ward. She had worked briefly as a translator for Vale Meridian. Marcus remembered a relationship with her but denied knowing she was pregnant.
Elena disappeared two weeks before Noah's birth.
Her apartment had been emptied. Her car was found at an airport. No travel records showed her leaving the country.
The child's name was listed only as Samuel.
"Voss has Marcus's son," Clara said.
"Or someone wants us to believe he does."
Marcus received the news in prison. He sat behind glass, looking more frightened than he had at sentencing.
"Elena told me she wanted nothing from me," he said. "Then she stopped answering. I assumed she had moved on."
"Did Mom know about her?" Julian asked.
"Mom knew everything."
Eleanor agreed to speak when shown Samuel's file. She read the first page, closed it, and demanded that the camera in the interview room be turned off.
Ruiz refused.
Eleanor looked directly into the lens.
"Good," she said. "Then let him hear me."
She claimed Samuel had been conceived as part of Voss's plan. Elena was not a random employee. She was the daughter of another Circle founder, selected because her genetic line complemented Marcus's.
"Noah opens the archive," Eleanor said. "Samuel can alter it."
According to her, the Circle archive contained not only evidence but legal identities, trusts, biometric credentials, and ownership systems. A user with the correct combined profile could expose the Circle. Another profile could rewrite who controlled its assets.
"Voss does not want to destroy the archive," Eleanor said. "He wants to inherit it."
Julian asked where Samuel was being held.
Eleanor answered with a location on the northern coast, an abandoned children's hospital overlooking the sea.
Ruiz began preparing warrants.
Gabriel warned them that the location was likely a trap.
Clara looked at Noah and remembered the airfield, the second nursery, and the way powerful people reduced children to keys.
"We cannot leave another baby with him," she said.
They traveled under federal protection two nights later. Marcus was transferred temporarily to assist because Voss might respond to his voice. Gabriel remained behind with Noah and a security team selected outside every compromised agency.
The abandoned hospital stood on black cliffs above violent water. Its windows had been boarded, but a single light burned on the highest floor.
Inside, the halls smelled of salt, dust, and old disinfectant. Children's murals peeled from the walls. Small handprints had been painted beneath smiling suns.
At the end of the third-floor corridor, they found a nursery.
A baby slept in the center crib.
Marcus approached slowly.
"Samuel?"
The child opened his eyes.
A speaker above the crib came alive.
Voss said, "Welcome home, son."
Steel doors closed behind them.
Julian rushed to the crib, but Clara stopped him.
Something about the baby's blanket was wrong. A wire disappeared beneath its edge.
Ruiz ordered everyone back.
Marcus did not move.
"That is my child."
"It may be an explosive device," Ruiz said.
The speaker clicked again.
"No bomb," Voss said. "Only a choice."
A screen lit on the wall. It showed Noah sleeping in the Vale nursery hundreds of miles away.
Gabriel sat beside the crib, reading.
Then a figure entered the edge of the camera frame.
Gabriel looked up.
His face changed.
The figure wore a detention officer's uniform and carried a silver-and-black ring.
Clara grabbed Julian's hand.
"Call the house."
There was no signal.
On the screen, the intruder leaned toward Noah.
In the abandoned hospital, Samuel began to cry.
Voss spoke one final time.
"One child reveals the Circle. The other child commands it. You may save only one before the doors unlock."
Marcus lifted Samuel from the crib despite Ruiz's warning.
No explosion followed.
Instead, a violet mark appeared on the baby's heel.
Julian stared at it.
The same mark Eleanor claimed she had placed on him at birth.
Clara looked from Samuel to the screen showing Noah.
Then the nursery camera at home turned slowly toward the intruder's face.
The image froze one second before the face became visible.
Across the hospital wall, a new message appeared.
ELEANOR LIED ABOUT WHICH CHILD SHE TOOK HOME.
The lights went out.
Before traveling north, Clara copied the nursery feed into three independent systems and required rotating verification calls from the house. Gabriel protested that the procedures were excessive. Clara reminded him that his own network had once watched her without consent. This time, every person with access signed a written boundary agreement. Protection would be transparent or it would not happen. Gabriel signed first. The gesture did not erase the past, but it showed that he had begun to understand the future Clara demanded. When the final frozen image appeared in the coastal hospital, she knew the system had not failed by accident. Someone with authorized access had betrayed them again.

In the coastal hospital, Clara noticed that Samuel's crib camera was the same model as the original device in Noah's nursery. Its indicator light blinked twice, paused, then blinked once. Gabriel had once used that pattern as an emergency code: an image was being delayed rather than shown live. The screen at home might be seconds, minutes, or hours behind. That uncertainty was Voss's real weapon. He wanted them to choose under panic. Clara tightened her grip on Julian's hand and decided that before they obeyed any countdown, they would first prove which danger existed now.
And somewhere in the darkness, a baby stopped crying.
