Chapter 11 - North of the Border
The message led to an abandoned rail line running toward Canada. Federal agents wanted Adrian to remain available for testimony, but the task force itself had already begun to fracture. Some officials pursued Rourke aggressively. Others classified key evidence and warned the press that national security limited disclosure.
Director Seven remained unnamed.
Naomi traced the steel command box to Project Lantern, a compartmented military program officially terminated fifteen years earlier. Thomas Vale had helped design Lantern as a system for relocating intelligence assets. Rourke later expanded it into predictive coercion: mapping a target's relationships, fears, and likely responses under pressure.
Adrian's HOMECOMING file was a Lantern operation.
Tessa was still recovering and could barely walk, yet she insisted on joining the search for Caleb. Adrian resisted until she reminded him that Caleb had risked his life for both of them.
"Do not protect me by choosing for me," she said. "That is how Victor spoke."
The words hurt because they were true.
They traveled north with Naomi and Navarro in a medical transport van. Mason remained in protective custody, preparing to testify. Before leaving, he gave Adrian an address across the border: a former Gray Meridian safe house near Lake Aster.
Snow covered the property when they arrived. The cabin appeared empty, but fresh blood marked the back steps. Inside, they found Caleb alive, bound to a radiator. His throat wound had reopened. Dominic lay unconscious nearby with a gunshot through his side.
Caleb had turned on him during transport.
When Dominic woke, he laughed at Adrian. "You still think I am the monster at the center. I am a dog that learned to enjoy the leash."
"Who holds it?"
"Ask your wife."
Tessa stepped forward. Dominic looked at her bruises and showed no remorse.
"The woman with the silver ring," Tessa said. "Who is she?"
Dominic smiled. "Your mother."
The room went silent.
Margaret Wolfe had been declared dead when Tessa was fourteen. Her burned car was found at the bottom of a ravine. Dental records confirmed the body. Yet Dominic claimed Margaret survived and became Director Seven.
Tessa slapped him, then nearly fell from the pain.
Dominic continued. Margaret had not simply investigated Gray Meridian. She had helped transform it. She believed corrupt systems could be controlled if the right person held the files. After Thomas died, she disappeared and built a faction above Victor and Rourke. Her apparent death freed her from scrutiny.
"She ordered the thirty-one?" Tessa whispered.
"She ordered pressure. Victor chose the method. She knew what he was."
Adrian wanted proof. Dominic pointed to the steel command box in the corner.
Rourke had abandoned it during the escape after realizing Director Seven had inserted a tracker. Dominic stole it and took Caleb north, hoping to bargain. The box required Tessa's palm print.
Inside were Project Lantern's master protocols and a live list of active operations. One operation carried Tessa's name. Another carried Adrian's. A third listed Mason as expendable.
At the top of the command hierarchy was a biometric signature belonging to Margaret Elaine Wolfe.
Tessa stared at the screen until tears ran silently down her face.
A helicopter approached over the lake.
Dominic pulled at his restraints. "She found us. She always finds us."
Caleb signed urgently that the cabin contained a tunnel beneath the fireplace. They moved toward it as armed figures descended through the snow.
Before entering, Tessa looked back at the screen. A new operation had activated seconds earlier.
Its title was SECOND HOMECOMING.
At the ranger station, Caleb finally described the moment Dominic cut his throat. He had been twelve and had overheard Victor ordering Margaret's vehicle sabotage. Dominic was sixteen, desperate for approval. Victor handed him the knife and called the act a test. Caleb survived because Margaret returned unexpectedly and stopped the bleeding, then arranged secret treatment. That rescue had shaped his lifelong belief that she was different from Victor. Learning that she later directed Lantern did not erase the rescue, but it poisoned its meaning. Tessa held Caleb's hand while he struggled with the contradiction. People could save a life and still build a system that endangered it. The truth did not have to simplify itself for anyone's comfort. Adrian realized the coming confrontation with Margaret would not offer Tessa a clean enemy. It would offer a mother who had loved her through methods indistinguishable from control.
