Chapter 5 - The Doctor With Two Names

Lucas stepped between Dr. Mercer and Gwen's bed.
Detective Ruiz noticed the movement and rested one hand near her holster.
"What does the H stand for?" Lucas asked.
Dr. Mercer looked from him to the printed message.
"Hollis."
Gwen made a small sound.
Ruiz closed the door. "Are you related to a Hollis Mercer involved in banking investigations?"
Elaine removed her badge and placed it on the counter.
"Hollis was my father. He died four years ago."
Lucas did not move. "The message says H.M. will handle the certificate."
"It is not referring to me."
"How do I know that?"
"You don't."
Her answer was so direct that the room went still.
Elaine explained that her father had served on the board of the same regional bank where Daniel Vale worked. Publicly, Hollis supported Daniel's fraud allegations. Privately, he helped suppress them. Before his death, Hollis confessed that a network had manipulated birth certificates, medical records, inheritances, and property transfers for decades.
"The network called itself the Registry," Elaine said. "They did not steal babies randomly. They reassigned heirs."
Gwen held her belly.
Lucas felt sick.
Elaine had become an obstetrician because she wanted to understand how medical records could be altered without detection. She had spent years collecting fragments of her father's files, including references to the Winter Ledger. She believed it contained the original records of children whose identities or inheritances had been changed.
"Why didn't you tell police?" Ruiz asked.
"I did. Twice. Both investigations were closed. Evidence disappeared."
"And now Gwen happens to arrive at your hospital?"
Elaine looked at Lucas. "She did not happen to arrive here. The ambulance was redirected."
Ruiz immediately called dispatch.
The hospital room seemed to shrink.
Elaine continued. St. Catherine's was the one hospital where she controlled the obstetric records. Someone had directed Gwen there, possibly to ensure the baby was documented correctly before another group could interfere.
"Or to give you access," Lucas said.
Elaine accepted the accusation without flinching. "That is also possible."
A nurse knocked and whispered something to Ruiz. The detective stepped out.
Lucas looked at Gwen. Her eyes were on Elaine.
"Did you send the package?" Gwen asked.
"No."
"Did your father know Daniel?"
"Yes."
Gwen swallowed. "Did he kill him?"
Elaine's composure cracked.
"I don't know."
Ruiz returned. "Dispatch confirms the ambulance route was altered by a call from a city emergency administrator. The authorization code was 3179."
The four numbers appeared everywhere now, like a door that refused to open.
Elaine approached a locked cabinet and removed an old folder. Inside was a copy of a document dated thirty-four years earlier.
CERTIFICATE OF LIVE BIRTH.
The infant's name had been blacked out. The mother's name was Brenda Elise Dawson. The father line was blank.
Attached was a bank authorization assigning a trust to the child upon the thirtieth birthday.
Lucas stared at the date.
It was five years before he was born.
"Who was the child?" he asked.
Elaine pointed to a handwritten notation.
Transferred. New certificate issued. Winter code 3179.
Gwen whispered, "Brenda had another baby."
"Or gave birth under another name," Elaine said.
Lucas thought of his father's silence, his mother's obsession with bloodlines, the mansion Brenda insisted belonged to her.
His phone rang from an unknown number.
Ruiz nodded for him to answer on speaker.
A distorted voice filled the room.
"Lucas Dawson, your mother is not the architect. She is the gatekeeper."
"Who are you?"
"The woman beneath your table was never the real target."
Gwen gripped the blanket.
"The child is," the voice said. "At midnight Friday, the Registry corrects the line."
The call ended.
Friday was tomorrow.
At that exact moment, the lights in the room flickered.
The fetal monitor went dark.
A nurse shouted in the hallway.
Then the backup power came on, and the incubator prepared for Gwen's possible early delivery displayed a new patient name.
BABY VALE.
Not Dawson.

Brenda's cruelty did not become less cruel when viewed as strategy. That truth remained the hardest one for Lucas to accept. A person could be frightened and still abusive. A person could believe she was protecting someone while choosing methods that broke them. Motive explained the road, but it did not erase the bodies left along it.
