Chapter 8 - The Doctor Who Died Twice

Dr. Adrian Vale had been a young physician when the factory closed. Publicly, he ran a small clinic and treated families who could not afford care. Privately, he certified false injuries, invented disabilities, and signed competency reports used to remove owners from valuable property.

When an investigation began, Vale's car was found burned near the river. Dental records identified the body. The case was closed.

Henry opened an old file from his archive. "Thomas never believed the body was Vale."

The dental comparison had been performed by a county contractor connected to one of the predatory lenders. Samuel, then an auditor, found billing records suggesting Vale purchased another identity before the fire. But the evidence vanished after a courthouse flood.

"Thomas kept looking," Samuel said. "Rachel wanted him to stop. She was afraid for Elena."

Elena stared at the waveform on the recorder. The voice was controlled, educated, and cold. It instructed Beatrice to secure the beneficiary list before the cooperative's annual legal review.

"Why now?" Dana Brooks asked. "Why wait almost three decades?"

Henry explained that dormant charitable assets could revert to the state or be transferred to a successor organization if governance requirements were not met. Thomas had maintained the cooperative quietly. After his death, the upcoming anniversary triggered a review.

If Vale obtained the charter property and beneficiary records, he could present himself as the only surviving administrator or destroy evidence that would expose his past crimes.

"He financed Marcus because Marcus gave him access to Elena," Bell said.

Marcus, confronted with the audio, demanded immunity. Dana refused. He then offered information in exchange for consideration.

Elena watched his interview through one-way glass.

He described North as a voice on encrypted calls. Beatrice had introduced the contact two years earlier, long before Thomas became ill. Marcus initially believed they were pursuing an inheritance claim. After Thomas died, North demanded the house.

"Did you ever love your wife?" Bell asked.

Marcus shifted in his chair. "That is not relevant."

"It may explain how long you planned the fraud."

Marcus looked toward the glass, unable to see Elena but certain she was there.

"I loved her in the beginning," he said. "Then everything became about her father, her grief, her house. She never saw what I sacrificed."

Elena nearly laughed at the cruelty of his self-pity.

He admitted taking pills to imitate symptoms and using a drop of his own blood to create alarming laboratory results. Chloe prepared the reports. Beatrice rehearsed emotional conversations with him. They studied Elena's therapy schedule and timed each crisis for the days she felt most vulnerable.

Marcus claimed Vale never intended to hurt children. The brick at Harbor House had frightened him because it showed Vale was losing patience.

"Where is he?" Bell asked.

"I do not know."

"How do you contact him?"

Marcus provided an encrypted account and a phrase used to request meetings.

Dana authorized a controlled message.

Elena insisted on writing it herself.

The message said she was prepared to exchange Rachel's certificate and beneficiary list for proof that the house title would be restored. She proposed the abandoned rail depot at midnight.

Vale replied within four minutes.

Come alone, daughter of Rachel.

The wording made Elena's skin tighten.

Bell wanted to send an undercover officer. Samuel argued Vale would recognize the substitution. Henry wanted Elena kept miles away.

Elena listened, then made her decision.

"He has built every move around predicting me," she said. "He believes grief makes me easy to direct. Let him keep believing it."

The operation was planned with hidden teams, aerial surveillance, and a duplicate certificate. Elena wore a tracking device sewn into her cardigan and carried a folder containing blank beneficiary forms.

At eleven forty-five, she entered the rail depot.

Moonlight cut through broken windows. Rusted tracks disappeared into darkness.

A speaker crackled overhead.

"Place the folder on the platform," Vale's voice said.

Elena did not move. "Show yourself."

"Your mother said the same thing the night she discovered what Thomas had done."

Elena's heart stopped.

"What did my father do?"

"He chose the cooperative over his wife. Rachel intended to expose everyone, including Thomas. She died before she could."

Bell's voice whispered through Elena's earpiece, telling her to keep Vale talking.

"My mother died in a car accident."

"Your mother died because she trusted the wrong driver."

A figure appeared at the far end of the platform.

He was tall, gray-haired, and moved with a cane. His face did not match the old photographs of Vale, but surgery and time could explain that.

"Give me the list," he said.

Elena lifted the folder.

"Tell me who was driving."

The man smiled.

Then gunfire shattered the windows.

The figure fell.

Bell's team rushed in from both sides. Elena dropped behind a concrete barrier. Officers searched the roof and surrounding tracks, but the shooter escaped.

The wounded man survived.

At the hospital, fingerprint analysis identified him.

He was not Adrian Vale.

He was a retired actor named Leonard Crane, paid to wear an earpiece and repeat lines.

The real Vale had staged another death, this time in front of them.

In Leonard's pocket, police found a photograph of Rachel Ward's damaged car.

On the back was a handwritten message.

Thomas knew who cut the brake line.
