Chapter 4 - Sophia's Confession

Sophia collapsed before reaching the porch.
Daniel caught her.
“What happened?”
“Drive.”
“What?”
“Turn off the lights and drive.”
Ben scanned the road.
“No second vehicle.”
Sophia grabbed Daniel’s shirt.
“They’ll come.”
“Who?”
“Vale.”
Daniel looked at the blood on her face.
“Did he do this?”
“One of his men.”
Ben opened the door.
“Inside.”
Sophia stumbled to the kitchen.
Emily appeared halfway down the stairs.
“Aunt Sophia?”
Sophia looked up.
The little girl hugged Rosie tightly.
Sophia’s face crumpled.
“Oh, sweetheart.”
Emily stayed where she was.
“Why were you mean to me?”
The question hit harder than anything Daniel could have said.
Sophia closed her eyes.
“Because I was scared.”
“That doesn’t make it nice.”
“No.”
Sophia wiped tears from her cheeks.
“It doesn’t.”
Emily looked at her father.
Daniel nodded gently.
“Go back upstairs for a few minutes.”
Emily hesitated, then obeyed.
Sophia watched her disappear.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“You’re going to need more than that.”
“I know.”
Ben locked the doors.
“What’s on the drive?”
Sophia placed it on the table.
“Everything I could get.”
“From where?”
“Mom’s private server.”
Daniel stared.
“You hacked her?”
“I’ve had access for years.”
“Why?”
“Because I work for her.”
“No, Sophia. Why did you copy the files?”
Sophia sat heavily.
“Because Dad told me to.”
Daniel stopped.
“What?”
Sophia looked at him.
“Before he died.”
Daniel’s voice came out almost soundless.
“You’re lying.”
“I’m not.”
“Dad died twelve years ago.”
“I know.”
“You were twenty-six.”
“I know.”
“And you never told me?”
“He made me promise.”
Daniel laughed in disbelief.
“You expect that to matter now?”
“He thought you were safer if you didn’t know.”
“I was his son.”
“And you were already fighting with Mom.”
Daniel moved closer.
“What did Dad tell you?”
Sophia looked at Ben.
“Who is he?”
“Someone I trust.”
“That’s dangerous.”
Ben smiled without humor.
“I’ve been told.”
Sophia took a breath.
“Dad discovered someone had been using Carter Development to move money. At first he thought it was one executive. Then he found companies tied to politicians, judges, contractors, charities.”
“Falcon Ridge?”
“Yes.”
“Vale?”
“He never gave me that name.”
“What name did he give?”
Sophia looked down.
“The Circle.”
Ben’s expression sharpened.
Daniel noticed.
“You’ve heard it.”
“Only rumors.”
“What kind?”
“People in financial crimes used to joke about a network that could make investigations disappear.”
Sophia nodded.
“That’s them.”
Daniel felt the walls closing around him.
“What did Dad do?”
“He started collecting evidence.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know?”
“He didn’t trust anyone with the whole thing.”
“Not even you?”
“No.”
Sophia’s voice cracked.
“He gave me one job.”
“What?”
“Watch Mom.”
Daniel stared.
“You’ve been spying on her for twelve years?”
“Yes.”
“While working beside her?”
“Yes.”
“While treating me like I was dirt?”
Sophia looked ashamed.
“That part wasn’t all an act.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“At least you’re honest.”
“I was angry.”
“At me?”
“You left.”
“Mom drove me out.”
“You still left me with her.”
Daniel’s anger stopped.
Sophia’s eyes filled.
“You escaped, Daniel. I didn’t.”
For a moment they were not adults in Ben’s kitchen.
They were children again.
Daniel remembered Eleanor controlling their clothes, friends, grades, meals, schedules.
Samuel had been kinder, but absent constantly.
Daniel rebelled.
Sophia learned to survive by obedience.
Daniel left at twenty-two.
Sophia stayed.
“I hated you for that,” she whispered.
Daniel said nothing.
“So I became like her.”
Sophia laughed bitterly.
“Then Dad died, and suddenly I was trapped inside whatever he had discovered.”
Ben pointed at the flash drive.
“What specifically is on there?”
“Bank records. Recorded meetings. Property transfers. Names.”
“Vale?”
“No real identity.”
“Anything about Falcon Ridge?”
“Yes.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“And Emily?”
Sophia’s face changed.
That was enough.
“What about my daughter?”
Sophia did not answer.
“Sophia.”
“The trust.”
“What is it?”
“It isn’t money laundering.”
Ben frowned.
“Then what?”
Sophia looked directly at Daniel.
“It’s a lockbox.”
“For what?”
“Dad’s evidence.”
Daniel stared.
“All those properties?”
“They’re keys.”
“That makes no sense.”
“Dad structured ownership so control would eventually pass to your first child.”
“Why?”
“Because he believed you would never willingly return to the company.”
Daniel’s thoughts raced.
“So he hid evidence in a trust that wouldn’t activate until I had a child?”
“Yes.”
“Why not give it to me?”
“Because he thought they would watch you.”
“Who?”
“The Circle.”
Ben stepped closer.
“And the twenty-eight million?”
Sophia shook her head.
“That wasn’t Dad.”
“Mom?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To corrupt the trust.”
Daniel understood.
“If she used Emily’s trust for illegal transfers, then if Dad’s evidence surfaced…”
“They could claim the entire structure was criminal.”
“And blame Daniel,” Ben finished.
Sophia nodded.
Daniel felt sick.
His mother had not merely insulted him.
She had spent years building a legal bomb beneath his name and his daughter’s future.
“What happened tonight?”
Sophia touched the cut near her temple.
“When the lights went out, Vale’s men came for the recorder. I ran.”
“Why was Vale at the party?”
“He wasn’t.”
“Then who?”
Sophia swallowed.
“Mom called him after Emily took the recorder.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“How did Mom know Emily had it?”
Sophia looked toward the staircase.
“She searched the office security footage.”
“So she invited me tonight knowing Emily had evidence hidden in Rosie?”
Sophia nodded.
Daniel felt fury spread through him.
“She planned that humiliation.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To make you leave the house before Vale’s people arrived.”
Daniel stared.
“That sounds like protecting me.”
“It wasn’t.”
Sophia’s eyes darkened.
“She wanted you outside.”
“Why?”
“Because there was supposed to be an accident on your drive home.”
Silence.
Daniel could hear the refrigerator humming.
Ben spoke first.
“What kind of accident?”
May you like
Sophia looked at Daniel.
“Your brakes.”
