Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT DAVID CAME HOME

David broke every speed limit between Blackwood Manor and the safe apartment.

Rachel’s team arrived first.

The front door was open.

One security officer lay unconscious in the hallway.

Another had vanished.

David ran upstairs.

“Emily!”

No answer.

The bedroom was empty.

Blood marked the carpet.

Not much.

Enough.

David nearly stopped functioning.

Rachel grabbed his arm.

“Stay with me.”

“They took her.”

“We don’t know that.”

“Her phone.”

They found it under the bed.

A new message appeared.

Come home.

David looked at Rachel.

“Blackwood Manor.”

“It could be a trap.”

“It is.”

He headed for the door.

Rachel blocked him.

“You go in angry, Eleanor wins.”

“My wife is eight months pregnant and drugged.”

“I know.”

“Move.”

“No.”

For one second they stared at each other.

Then Rachel said, “Let us do this properly.”

They did not have time for warrants.

They did have probable cause, an injured security officer, an abduction, and Vance’s partial cooperation.

Federal agents surrounded Blackwood Manor shortly after eleven.

David went through the front entrance before anyone could stop him.

And saw Emily on her knees.

The basin.

Eleanor.

Liam, who had disappeared from the car after receiving a message from their mother.

Vance.

The syringe.

The forged transfer documents.

The medical report.

The wrong file.

David opened the next page.

It was a birth record.

Not from four years earlier.

Current.

Patient: Emily Rose Blackwood.

Estimated delivery authorization.

Neonatal transfer recipient:

Blackwood Legacy Custodial Division.

David’s eyes lifted.

“You planned to take this baby too.”

Emily sobbed.

Eleanor said nothing.

Vance backed toward the wall.

David looked at the date.

Procedure scheduled in three days.

Emily’s due date was five weeks away.

“They were going to induce labor,” she whispered.

David looked at Vance.

The doctor said, “I didn’t agree.”

“Your signature is here.”

“I signed under pressure.”

Eleanor laughed.

“Coward.”

David turned to his mother.

“You were going to steal our son.”

Eleanor stood.

“I was going to prevent you from destroying something your grandfather spent generations building.”

“By kidnapping children?”

“By preserving bloodlines.”

Emily stared.

“What does that even mean?”

Eleanor looked at her with disgust.

“You wouldn’t understand.”

Emily slowly stood straighter.

Bruised.

Drugged.

Barefoot.

But no longer kneeling.

“Try me.”

Eleanor smiled.

“The Blackwoods did not become powerful because they were lucky.”

David’s face hardened.

Eleanor continued.

“For decades, Halcyon placed children strategically. Families without heirs received them. Families with unsuitable heirs replaced them. Alliances survived. Trusts remained intact. Companies stayed controlled.”

Emily whispered, “You treated babies like contracts.”

“We treated inheritance as a responsibility.”

Liam looked sick.

“Was I placed?”

Eleanor ignored him.

He shouted.

“Was I?”

She looked at him.

“Yes.”

The answer broke something in him.

“Why?”

“Because after Thomas discovered the truth about David, he refused to have another child with me.”

Liam stepped backward.

“You adopted me to punish him?”

“I adopted you because I needed an heir loyal to me.”

Liam stared at her.

Eleanor’s face softened.

“You were supposed to be that.”

He laughed.

Then began crying.

David had never seen his brother cry.

Not at their father’s funeral.

Not once.

Eleanor looked disgusted.

“You see?” she said to David. “This is why I chose wrong.”

David moved toward her.

Emily caught his hand.

Sirens sounded outside.

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.

“You brought police?”

“Federal agents.”

For the first time, real fear crossed her face.

Vance moved suddenly.

Not toward the door.

Toward Emily.

He grabbed her.

The syringe appeared again.

David lunged.

Vance held it against Emily’s neck.

“Stop!”

Everyone froze.

Vance shook.

“I’m not going to prison.”

Rachel’s voice came from the doorway.

“Drop the syringe.”

Agents filled the hall.

Vance looked trapped.

Emily breathed carefully.

David stared at him.

“Adrian.”

“Shut up.”

“You don’t want to hurt her.”

“You don’t know what I want.”

“I know Eleanor will let you take the blame.”

Vance’s eyes flickered toward Eleanor.

She said nothing.

David saw it.

“So do you.”

“Stop talking.”

“She already moved money.”

Vance looked at Eleanor.

“What?”

David continued.

“Eighty million. Escape fund.”

Eleanor snapped, “He’s lying.”

Liam laughed bitterly.

“No, he isn’t.”

Vance stared.

“You said the money was for legal defense.”

Eleanor’s expression betrayed her.

That was enough.

Vance lowered the syringe slightly.

Rachel moved.

Agents tackled him.

Emily fell forward.

David caught her.

Eleanor ran.

She made it six steps.

Agents stopped her at the staircase.

For a moment she screamed like David had never heard her scream.

Not elegant.

Not controlled.

Animal.

“This house is mine!”

David held Emily.

“No.”

Eleanor looked at him.

He said the words slowly.

“It never was.”

By 1:30 a.m., Eleanor Blackwood was in federal custody.

Dr. Vance was under guard at a hospital.

Blackwood Manor had been sealed as a crime scene.

Emily was admitted for observation.

Their unborn son was stable.

And Liam sat alone in a police interview room, trying to decide whether to become a witness against the only mother he had ever known.

It should have felt like victory.

Then Rachel entered Emily’s hospital room.

Her expression said otherwise.

David stood.

“What?”

Rachel closed the door.

“We searched the manor.”

“And?”

“The real ledger isn’t there.”

David looked at Emily.

Rachel continued.

“And someone accessed Halcyon’s central archive twenty minutes before the raid.”

“Who?”

“We don’t know.”

“What did they take?”

May you like

Rachel hesitated.

“Everything.”
