Chapter 4 - The Storage Unit

The storage facility stood outside Westbridge near an abandoned highway.
Hannah drove there alone while Owen stayed with a school friend.
The manager examined Daniel’s deposit receipt and employee badge.
“This account has been inactive for years,” he said. “The rental period ends next month. We were preparing to clear the unit.”
“Did anyone else ask about it?”
The manager checked his computer.
“Two men came several years ago claiming to represent Mr. Mercer’s family. They didn’t have the correct key or authorization.”
“Can you describe them?”
“One wore a Westbridge security jacket.”
The brass key from Union Station opened Unit 214.
Inside stood a metal desk, three boxes, a folding chair, and a locked fireproof case.
Hannah expected important documents.
She did not expect to find evidence of an entire hidden investigation.
Daniel had collected photographs of corroded factory valves, copies of internal emails, production schedules, and financial records showing that Westbridge had delayed safety repairs to avoid shutting down the factory before a major contract deadline.
One email came from Victor Caldwell.
Keep Line Four operating through Friday. I don’t care whose signature you need.
Another message was addressed to Frank.
Approve the manual override. Your position and pension depend on cooperation.
Frank had replied with only two words:
Understood, sir.
Hannah lowered herself into the folding chair.
Her father had known.
But Daniel’s notes revealed more.
Frank had initially refused to sign the override. Caldwell threatened to fire him, cancel his pension, and accuse him of previous safety violations. Frank gave in.
Daniel discovered the order and confronted him.
According to Daniel’s notebook, Frank begged him to remain silent until the contract shipment was completed.
Daniel refused.
The final entry was dated on the morning of the accident.
I am going to trigger a full shutdown. Frank says Caldwell has people watching me. If I fail, the recorder explains everything. Copies are separated. Hannah must never be blamed.
The fireproof case required a four-digit code.
Hannah tried Daniel’s birthday.
Nothing.
She tried her own.
Nothing.
Then she entered the date they had learned she was pregnant.
The lock clicked.
Inside was a USB drive, a sealed letter addressed to Hannah, and a small silver ring.
It was the ring Daniel had planned to give her.
Hannah placed it on her finger before opening the letter.
Hannah,
If you are reading this, I failed to come home. I need you to know that I did not run away. I would never leave you or our child willingly.
The factory is more dangerous than anyone understands. Your father made a terrible decision, but he is not the only person responsible. Caldwell built a system where fear became more powerful than conscience.
I recorded every meeting I could. The files are on the drive. One copy was placed somewhere Caldwell would never think to search.
Do not confront them until you have protection. Do not trust the first person who offers to help. And please tell our child that I loved them before I ever saw their face.
Daniel
Hannah sat in the silent storage unit with the letter in her hands.
For ten years, she had hoped to prove Daniel’s innocence.
Now she had the evidence.
Yet one question remained unanswered.
What had happened to him after the factory accident?
She connected the USB drive to an old laptop found inside the case.
The first videos showed meetings between Daniel, Frank, and Caldwell. The audio was clear.
Caldwell threatened them.
Frank pleaded for more time.
Daniel warned that workers would be hurt.
Then Hannah opened the final file.
The camera shook as Daniel moved through a dark factory corridor. Alarms sounded in the background. He coughed but remained conscious.
He turned the camera toward himself.
“The line failed at 2:17,” he said. “I initiated evacuation. Frank was trapped in the control room. I got him out.”
The image shifted.
Two men in Westbridge security uniforms approached Daniel outside the building.
One said, “Mr. Caldwell wants to speak with you before the authorities arrive.”
Daniel backed away.
The video ended.
A second file began several hours later.
Daniel appeared in an unfamiliar room. A cut marked his forehead, but he was alert.
“If this uploads,” he said, “Westbridge security has taken me to the old company clinic. They want me to sign a confession.”
A door opened behind him.
Daniel quickly hid the camera.
A man’s voice entered the recording.
May you like
It belonged to Frank.
