Chapter 1 - The Perfect HusbandSix years earlier, Preston Hale had entered Madison Vale’s life carrying two cups of coffee and wearing the kind of smile that made strangers believe they had known him forever.

They met at a charity event organized by the Vale Foundation in Boston.
Madison was twenty-eight and already serving as the director of several educational programs funded by her father’s company. Despite being the only daughter of billionaire insurance executive Elias Vale, she avoided society parties and rarely appeared in celebrity magazines.
Preston was different.
He enjoyed attention.
At the time, he worked as a financial consultant for a respected investment firm. He was handsome, intelligent, and skilled at making people feel important.
When Madison accidentally spilled coffee on a stack of donation forms, Preston appeared with napkins before anyone else noticed.
“You’ve just destroyed three million dollars in promises,” he joked.
Madison laughed.
“They were blank forms.”
“Then I arrived just in time.”
Their courtship moved quickly.
Preston sent flowers to her office, remembered details from every conversation, and appeared to admire her independence. He never asked direct questions about her inheritance. He insisted that he loved her for her kindness rather than her family name.
Even Elias initially approved of him.
“He looks at you as though you are the only person in the room,” Elias told his daughter.
Madison believed that was love.
She did not yet understand that Preston looked at valuable things in exactly the same way.
They married eighteen months later in a private ceremony at the Vale family estate. Preston signed a prenuptial agreement without complaint.
“I don’t want your money,” he told Madison before signing. “I only want a life with you.”
For the first two years, their marriage appeared happy.
They purchased a home overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Preston left his investment firm and launched a private consulting company. Madison helped him make introductions but refused to invest directly in his business.
Preston claimed he respected her decision.
In reality, his company was already losing money.
He had made reckless investments, borrowed heavily, and hidden the losses behind false financial reports. He maintained his expensive lifestyle by taking new loans to cover the old ones.
Madison knew nothing about the debt.
She also knew nothing about Celeste Monroe.
Celeste had joined Madison’s office as a junior assistant. She was ambitious, observant, and fascinated by the wealth surrounding the Vale family.
At first, Madison trusted her.
Celeste organized appointments, handled travel schedules, and knew when Madison and Preston would be apart.
The affair began during a conference in Chicago.
By the end of the year, Preston had promised Celeste that Madison would soon be gone from their lives.
“What does that mean?” Celeste asked one night in a hotel room.
“It means I married into a fortune,” Preston replied, “and I’m tired of being treated like a guest.”
Madison remained unaware until the week she announced her pregnancy.
She expected the news to repair the growing distance in her marriage.
Instead, Preston stared at the positive test with an expression she could not understand.
“A baby changes everything,” Madison said softly.
Preston forced a smile.
“Yes,” he answered. “Everything.”
That night, after Madison fell asleep, Preston walked into his office and opened a file containing her financial information.
