Chapter 10 - The Prosecutor Who Closed Every Door

The escape shaft opened into a storm drain half a mile from Vale House. Evelyn, Sofia, and Helena emerged into rain while the east wing burned behind them. Tactical officers surrounded the property, but none responded to Evelyn’s calls. Their radios carried Hale’s command: detain Evelyn Cross as a material threat.

Sofia led them through the trees to a vehicle Marcus had hidden years earlier. Maya waited inside with Ward, who had left the hospital against medical advice.

“Hale tried to arrest me,” Maya said. “Marcus blocked the transport van.”

The prosecutor had spent months presenting himself as the only official untouched by Vale influence. That was why Daniel Cross chose him.

Marcus decrypted the file Julian saved. Thomas Vale’s death had been ruled a heart attack during a private dinner eighteen months earlier. The final page showed a dosage chart for a drug that caused cardiac arrest without leaving routine toxicology traces.

Three people had access: Eleanor, Adrian, and Evelyn.

The file included Evelyn’s fingerprint on the medication vial.

She remembered that night only in fragments. Thomas summoned her to his study and accused her of weakening Adrian. He played the Bellweather tone through an antique clock. Evelyn woke hours later in her bedroom while the household mourned.

“I killed him,” she said.

Helena shook her head. Her voice remained weak, but her certainty was sharp. “A conditioned hand is not a consenting mind.”

Ward examined the dosage record. “This may still be fabricated.”

Sofia disagreed. She had been present at Vale House that night, working under Eleanor’s orders. Evelyn carried a glass into Thomas’s study. Adrian followed ten minutes later. Eleanor entered last.

“Who came out?” Maya asked.

“All three,” Sofia said. “But Thomas was still alive when Evelyn left.”

Adrian might know the final sequence.

Hale transferred him from county custody before exposing himself. The official record said Adrian was being moved to federal protective detention. The transport vanished on the highway.

Marcus tracked the vehicle through traffic cameras to Ashdown Behavioral Research, the clinic supposedly destroyed by fire. The burned public building concealed an underground facility still operating on backup power.

Before they could move, a national arrest alert appeared with Evelyn’s photograph. She was accused of murdering Thomas, abducting Helena March, and orchestrating the attack at Vale House. Maya and Sofia were named accomplices. Ward was labeled a corrupt fugitive.

Hale had closed every legal door.

Evelyn opened a different one.

She contacted Celeste, who had remained under federal medical protection. Celeste used a memorized emergency number to reach senior Judge Miriam Cole, one of Thomas’s former allies. Marcus’s archive contained evidence that Thomas blackmailed Cole over her son’s addiction, but also proof that she secretly dismissed several Bellweather-linked cases to protect victims.

Cole agreed to issue a sealed order appointing an independent special master to preserve the evidence. It would not clear them, but it would prevent Hale from legally destroying every file.

“Why help us now?” Evelyn asked.

“Because Thomas died before I found the courage,” Cole replied. “I will not wait for Daniel to do the same.”

At Ashdown, they entered through a disused crematory tunnel. The clinic below was bright, sterile, and occupied. Technicians watched live feeds while patients sat in blue rooms repeating phrases.

Maya found Adrian strapped to a chair, headphones over his ears. A recording of Eleanor’s voice told him that Evelyn had betrayed him, that violence would restore order, that pain proved love.

Evelyn removed the headphones.

Adrian opened his eyes and lunged at her.

Ward restrained him. Helena spoke his childhood name, not Adrian but Adam. He froze.

“You were Daniel’s son,” Helena said. “Thomas took you after your mother tried to leave.”

Adrian began to shake.

Memories returned unevenly. On the night Thomas died, Evelyn delivered the medicated drink under conditioning. Thomas recognized the drug and forced her to leave. Adrian entered intending to confront him about his parentage. Eleanor arrived carrying the same vial.

It was Eleanor who increased the dose.

But Thomas did not drink it.

Daniel Cross stepped from a hidden passage and injected him.

“Father killed Father,” Adrian whispered.

A door slammed at the end of the hall.

Hale appeared with armed security officers. “Put your hands where I can see them.”

Ward aimed back. “Your authority has been suspended by Judge Cole.”

Hale smiled. “Judge Cole died twenty minutes ago.”

Marcus checked his phone. News alerts confirmed a fatal car explosion outside the courthouse.

Hale raised a small transmitter.

Every patient in the blue rooms stood at once.

He pressed the button.

The clinic lights turned red, and dozens of conditioned subjects began walking toward Evelyn.
