Chapter 8 - The Camera Saw Everything

Evelyn placed the memory card in Amelia’s palm.

“It contains the truth,” she said. “But if you release it now, they will know what else we have.”

Another contraction tightened through Amelia’s body. She gripped the elevator rail and forced herself to breathe.

Noah pressed the button for the underground loading dock. “We have a mobile medical unit waiting.”

Maya entered behind them with Claire and Daniel. “My team will hold the floor as long as possible.”

The elevator descended.

Evelyn explained that Noah had recovered the cockpit camera after intercepting Grant Sloane. The footage clearly showed Richard leaving his seat, embracing Amelia, and pushing her through the open door. It also captured a conversation before takeoff that Amelia had not heard because she was outside the aircraft.

Richard had spoken to someone through an encrypted headset.

The voice said, “Confirm viability before termination.”

Richard answered, “The prenatal sequence is complete. The mother is no longer necessary.”

Amelia closed her eyes.

The words made the pregnancy feel suddenly watched, measured, and owned by strangers.

The elevator stopped at the basement.

The doors did not open.

Noah examined the control panel. “Power has been cut.”

Maya used the emergency key, but the doors moved only a few inches. Through the gap they saw armed men waiting in the loading dock.

Richard had anticipated the escape.

Noah closed the doors and opened the ceiling hatch. “We go up one floor and cross to the old surgical wing.”

Daniel boosted Claire through first. Evelyn followed. Amelia tried to climb, but another contraction doubled her over.

“We cannot move her like this,” Maya said.

“We cannot leave her here,” Noah replied.

The elevator lights went out.

A voice came through the emergency speaker.

“Amelia,” Richard said. “You are surrounded. Give me the memory card and I will allow the doctors to help you.”

She looked at the speaker. “You tried to kill your own child.”

“No. I tried to protect what the child represents.”

“You knew I was your sister.”

A pause.

Then Richard said, “Biology is not morality.”

Evelyn made a broken sound above them.

Richard continued. “Our parents created a purpose larger than family. Helena understood that before she betrayed us.”

“My mother tried to stop you.”

“She tried to steal decades of work.”

Metal scraped below the elevator. Richard’s men were forcing open the lower doors.

Noah climbed down beside Amelia. “We need the card.”

She hesitated.

“If they capture us, the evidence disappears,” he said. “I can transmit it from the roof.”

“Why not transmit it now?”

“Because the hospital is blocking external signals.”

Amelia gave him the card.

He climbed through the ceiling hatch and vanished.

Seconds later, the lower doors opened.

Maya fired first, striking the lights rather than the men. Darkness swallowed the shaft. Daniel pulled Amelia through the ceiling while Maya covered them.

They crawled across the elevator roof and climbed into the seventh-floor corridor.

The old surgical wing had been closed for renovation. Plastic sheets hung from the ceiling. Dust covered abandoned equipment. Claire found a wheelchair and pushed Amelia while Daniel locked doors behind them.

Evelyn led them toward a stairwell.

A man stepped from behind the plastic curtain.

Judge Harold Mercer.

He wore no robe, only an expensive gray suit. Two sheriff’s deputies stood behind him.

“Mrs. Vale,” he said, “you are in medical distress. You must come with us.”

Maya displayed her badge. “Federal investigation. Step aside.”

Mercer smiled. “You have no arrest warrant.”

“You have a conflict of interest.”

“I have a lawful order.”

Amelia looked at the deputies. Both avoided her eyes.

Then the wall monitor behind Mercer flickered on.

The helicopter footage began to play.

Richard appeared on screen pushing Amelia through the open door.

Every television in the hospital activated at once. So did the lobby displays, the patient tablets, and the security monitors.

Noah had reached the broadcast system.

Mercer’s smile vanished.

The footage continued into the preflight conversation.

Confirm viability before termination.

Hospital staff began recording the screens with their phones. The video spread online before Richard’s team could cut the network.

The deputies stepped away from Mercer.

Maya raised her weapon. “Judge Harold Mercer, you are being detained for obstruction.”

Mercer looked past her, toward a dark operating room.

“Too late,” he said.

A shot cracked from inside.

Evelyn fell.

Amelia screamed as blood spread across Evelyn’s blue robe.

The shooter escaped through a service door.

Daniel chased him. Maya called for medical help.

Evelyn gripped Amelia’s hand with surprising strength.

“There are two children,” she whispered.

Amelia bent closer. “What?”

“Your mother had twins.”

Then Evelyn lost consciousness.

May you like

Amelia’s next contraction came with a rush of warm fluid.

Her water had broken.
