Chapter 12 - THE HOSPITAL BELOW THE HOSPITAL

Saint Augustine Hospital appeared ordinary from the street.
Ambulances entered the emergency bay. Nurses moved behind bright windows. Families sat in the lobby drinking bad coffee and waiting for news.
Beneath the western parking structure, Nathaniel opened a maintenance door with the founder’s emergency code.
The code failed.
Helena had already changed the system.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Try mine.”
Everyone looked at him.
“Why would you have access?”
“Because my mother expected me to inherit her position.”
He entered a twelve-digit sequence.
The door unlocked.
Miriam kept her weapon trained on him.
“If this is a trap—”
“Everything is a trap,” Marcus said.
They descended four levels beneath the public basement.
The air became colder.
White corridors replaced concrete service halls. Security cameras followed their movement.
Nathaniel carried a small device that looped the video feed.
“How many people work down here?” Claire asked.
“Officially, none,” he answered.
They reached a glass wall overlooking an enormous circular chamber.
Rows of empty medical beds surrounded a central platform.
The Genesis Chamber.
Evelyn approached the glass.
“This was beneath Claire’s workplace the whole time.”
Claire looked sick.
“Were patients brought here from upstairs?”
“Only selected ones,” Nathaniel said.
“Selected for what?”
“Compatibility.”
“With what?”
No one answered.
A light activated on the central platform.
Helena appeared on a suspended screen.
She had changed from her evening gown into a white medical coat.
“Welcome home, Nathaniel.”
He stepped toward the intercom.
“Where is Lillian?”
Helena smiled.
“You still ask the wrong question.”
Evelyn pressed the control.
“You called me with my mother’s voice.”
“I called you with a voice.”
“Is she alive?”
“Define alive.”
Nathaniel struck the glass.
“Enough.”
Helena’s gaze moved to Marcus.
“My disappointing son.”
“You left me in the house.”
“You failed to secure Evelyn. You failed to retrieve the Archive. You allowed emotion to interfere with purpose.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You trained me to marry her.”
“I trained you to control her.”
Evelyn looked at him.
There was something humiliating in the way Helena spoke, reducing years of marriage and abuse to a failed assignment.
Marcus seemed smaller under her judgment.
Helena continued.
“Bring Nathaniel to the chamber, and I will release the patient.”
“What patient?” Evelyn demanded.
The screen changed.
A woman lay inside a transparent medical pod.
Her hair was white. Her face was thin. Tubes surrounded her.
But Evelyn recognized the shape of her eyes.
Lillian Hart.
Claire began crying.
“Mom.”
Nathaniel touched the glass with trembling fingers.
Helena appeared again.
“She has been waiting a very long time.”
Miriam turned on him.
“You knew.”
“No.”
“You built this facility.”
“I did not know Helena had recovered her.”
Helena laughed through the speaker.
“Recovered? Nathaniel, you transferred her yourself.”
“That authorization was forged.”
“Like Doctor Voss’s letter?”
Marcus looked sharply at the screen.
“You forged that?”
Helena ignored him.
Nathaniel entered a code on the chamber door.
It remained locked.
Helena’s voice softened.
“Only the founder’s current biometric profile can open it.”
“You stole the vault.”
“Yes.”
“Then you don’t need me.”
“I need your living neural pattern.”
Evelyn looked at her father.
Helena intended to use his brain activity to complete an authorization.
Nathaniel understood.
“If I enter, you release Lillian.”
“Naturally.”
“You have never done anything naturally.”
Helena smiled.
“You have thirty seconds.”
Gas began flowing into Lillian’s pod.
Alarms sounded on the monitor.
Nathaniel moved toward the chamber entrance.
Evelyn blocked him.
“She will kill you.”
“She may kill your mother if I refuse.”
“After everything, you still believe Helena keeps agreements?”
“No.”
“Then why go?”
Nathaniel looked at both daughters.
“Because some failures must be answered in person.”
He entered the access corridor.
The doors sealed behind him.
Helena emerged from a side chamber escorted by two armed guards.
She carried the founder’s seal.
Nathaniel stepped onto the central platform.
Mechanical restraints closed around his wrists.
“Release Lillian,” he said.
Helena approached him.
“Soon.”
Marcus moved quietly toward a security console.
Miriam saw him.
“What are you doing?”
“Trying not to disappoint my mother again.”
He entered his access code.
The guards’ weapons locked electronically.
Miriam fired through the glass access slot.
One guard fell.
Claire triggered the emergency pod release.
Lillian’s chamber opened.
Evelyn ran inside.
Helena pressed a control.
Metal shutters divided the room.
Evelyn reached her mother’s pod just before a wall sealed behind her.
Claire, Miriam, and Marcus were trapped on the opposite side.
Nathaniel remained restrained at the center.
Helena stood between them.
Evelyn touched her mother’s face.
Lillian’s skin was warm.
Her eyes opened.
For one perfect second, recognition filled them.
“Evie.”
Evelyn cried openly.
“I’m here.”
Lillian lifted one trembling hand.
“Don’t let him open the door.”
“What door?”
Her mother’s eyes moved toward Nathaniel.
“The one beneath the chamber.”
A deep mechanical sound rolled through the facility.
The circular platform began descending into the floor.
Nathaniel looked down in horror.
Helena smiled.
“You thought the Genesis Chamber was built for Lillian.”
The platform sank lower.
“It was built for what she discovered.”
Darkness opened beneath Nathaniel’s feet.

Something moved below.
Something large enough to shake the entire hospital.
