Chapter 14 - The Father Beneath the Airstrip

Samuel looked older than death.

His hair was white. His body was thin beneath a gray hospital gown. Tubes ran into his arms, and a metal frame supported his spine.

But his eyes were clear.

Emily knew those eyes.

She crossed the room before she could stop herself.

“Dad.”

Samuel raised one trembling hand.

She took it.

He touched her face as if confirming she was real.

“My brave girl.”

Evelyn stood behind her, unable to move.

Samuel looked at her too.

“My other brave girl.”

Evelyn began crying.

Diane remained near the elevator.

“Samuel,” she said.

His expression hardened.

“You should not have brought them.”

“There was no more time.”

Emily knelt beside him. “You died nine years ago.”

“No. They declared me dead nine years ago.”

“Why are you here?”

“Because I built the first version of the memory core.”

The confession silenced the room.

Samuel looked toward the servers.

“Bellweather began with medical intentions. Trauma patients. Memory recovery. Identity reconstruction after brain injury. I funded the research after discovering what happened to your births.”

“You helped them,” Evelyn said.

“I believed technology could restore what they stole. Instead Julian’s network learned that memory could be edited, copied, and weaponized.”

“Who is Julian?” Emily asked.

Samuel’s face tightened. “My brother.”

Emily stared at him.

“He was born Gabriel Carter,” Samuel said. “Our father gave him to the same program that later took you. Gabriel returned years later as Julian Cross, wearing the identity of a lawyer’s dead son. By then, he no longer knew where Gabriel ended and Julian began.”

“The first replacement,” Evelyn whispered.

“Yes.”

Diane approached the central console. “The purge has begun. We need the master index.”

Samuel looked at her. “And then?”

“We expose them.”

“You said that before.”

Diane’s jaw tightened.

Emily looked between them. “What are you not telling us?”

Samuel turned to the sisters.

“The active Carter is not a person. It is an authorization identity encoded through your family line. Diane carries the biological key. I carry the legal key. You two carry the behavioral key.”

“Together?” Emily asked.

“Together, Bellweather can access accounts, trusts, political proxies, and continuity contracts hidden worldwide.”

Evelyn looked around the core. “So they kept us divided to stop us from controlling the system.”

“And to prevent you from destroying it.”

Diane inserted the archive drive into the console.

A world map appeared, filled with red lights.

Two hundred fourteen deep-sleep subjects.

Thousands of replacements.

Financial networks worth hundreds of billions.

A prompt opened.

CARTER AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Three biometric stations illuminated.

Diane placed her hand on the first.

Samuel placed his on the second.

Emily and Evelyn stood before the third.

It required two palms.

They looked at each other.

“Once activated,” Samuel said, “you can release the subject locations and freeze Bellweather assets.”

“That ends it,” Emily said.

“No,” Samuel replied. “It begins a global hunt. Governments, corporations, and families will discover people they love may not be who they believe.”

Evelyn placed her hand on the scanner.

Emily joined her.

The system recognized them.

MASTER INDEX UNLOCKED.

The map expanded.

New names appeared.

Some belonged to people officially dead.

Some belonged to current world leaders.

Some belonged to children.

Emily saw Mark’s name.

Status: CONTINUITY DUPLICATE.

She stared.

“What does that mean?”

Samuel looked away.

Diane whispered, “The Mark you married may not be the Mark who caused the crash.”

Emily’s heart pounded.

The system showed two entries.

MARK DAVID CARTER - DECEASED, SEVEN YEARS AGO.

M-9 ACTIVE - LOCATION UNKNOWN.

Then the elevator alarm sounded.

Someone was coming down.

Diane pulled a gun.

Samuel looked toward the doors.

“They found us.”

The elevator opened.

Mark stepped out.

Alone.

He saw his own file on the screen.

His face went blank.

Emily turned toward him.

“Who are you?”

Mark looked at Samuel.

Then Diane.

Finally at Emily.

“I hoped you would never ask me that.”

The core lights turned red.

A message appeared across every screen.

ORIGINAL M-9 HAS ENTERED FACILITY.

Two Marks existed.

One stood in front of Emily.

The other was somewhere above them.
