Chapter 11 - The Transfer at Midnight

Emergency lights flickered red along the corridor.

Gunshots sounded outside.

Ethan threw himself over Natalie as glass shattered behind them.

Brooke pulled Caleb beneath the bed.

Robert twisted against the examination-chair restraints.

In the darkness, Elaine shouted.

“Who disabled the system?”

A mechanical voice answered from the tablet.

TRANSFER DIVERTED.

Elaine screamed.

“No!”

The lights returned.

Miriam stood beside her with blood running down one arm. The gun had changed hands.

Miriam pressed it against Elaine’s chest.

“You never understood Elias’s trust,” she said. “It could not transfer to an organization. Only to a biological descendant.”

Elaine looked at the tablet.

The screen displayed a new beneficiary.

NATALIE COLE.

Below it, another line appeared.

SECONDARY PROTECTED BENEFICIARY: CALEB MERCER.

Brooke stared at the name.

“Mercer?”

Elaine’s face went still.

Miriam looked at Brooke.

“Elaine is Caleb’s biological grandmother.”

Brooke recoiled.

“No.”

Elaine laughed.

“You still haven’t told them everything.”

Miriam’s hand trembled.

Brooke stood slowly, shielding Caleb.

“Who is his father?”

No one answered.

Brooke looked at Robert.

Then Ethan.

Then Elaine.

“Tell me.”

Elaine smiled.

“Ethan.”

The room seemed to stop.

Natalie turned toward him.

Ethan stared at Elaine.

“That’s impossible.”

Brooke looked horrified.

“I’ve never been with Ethan.”

“Not willingly,” Elaine said. “Havenbridge stored genetic material from every Cole family member.”

Ethan’s stomach turned.

“You created a child using my DNA?”

“You were considered a strong candidate.”

Brooke covered Caleb’s ears.

“Stop.”

Elaine continued.

“Brooke believed she was receiving fertility treatment during her marriage. The embryo was created before her husband entered the clinic.”

Caleb clung to her.

“Mommy, what are they saying?”

“Nothing,” Brooke whispered. “They’re saying nothing.”

Ethan looked at the boy.

The child had his eyes.

He had not noticed before.

Perhaps because he had not known to look.

Natalie’s face showed shock but not accusation.

Miriam lowered the gun slightly.

Elaine seized the moment.

She knocked Miriam’s arm aside and ran toward the rear door.

Mills entered from the corridor.

“Stop!”

Elaine fired.

The bullet struck Robert’s shoulder.

Agents returned fire.

Elaine fell against the wall.

Blood spread across her silk blouse.

For a moment, she looked like Lorraine again.

An elegant mother wounded inside a nightmare.

Then she smiled.

“You think killing me ends anything?”

She reached inside her blouse.

Ethan saw the trigger device.

“Bomb!”

He pulled Natalie from the bed as everyone dropped.

Elaine pressed the switch.

Nothing happened.

Her smile disappeared.

Miriam held up a small battery.

“I removed it while you were at the hospital.”

Elaine stared at her.

Mills moved forward and kicked the weapon away.

Agents restrained her.

Robert groaned inside the chair.

Brooke knelt beside him despite everything.

“You need pressure on the wound.”

She tore fabric from her coat and pressed it against his shoulder.

Robert looked at Caleb.

“I’m sorry.”

Brooke’s eyes filled with fury.

“You don’t get to say that.”

Natalie leaned against Ethan.

The tablet continued processing the trust transfer.

Figures moved across the screen.

Forty-three million dollars.

Not two million.

Not three million.

Forty-three million dollars accumulated through decades of Havenbridge activity.

Natalie stared at the amount.

“That money came from children.”

Miriam nodded.

“And families. Governments. Medical companies.”

“I don’t want it.”

“You need it to dismantle the foundation.”

Mills looked at the tablet.

“If the funds are evidence, federal authorities may freeze them.”

Miriam smiled faintly.

“They can try.”

The final authorization appeared.

TRUST TRANSFER COMPLETE.

At that exact moment, every phone in the room received the same message.

A video opened automatically.

A man sat behind a desk in a dark office.

Dr. Elias Warren.

Natalie’s biological father.

According to official records, he had died in the St. Agnes fire.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Natalie,” he said, “if you are watching this, the trust has recognized you.”

Natalie’s breath stopped.

“You have been told that Havenbridge was built to exploit children. That is only partially true. Havenbridge was built because something happened thirty-five years ago that governments could not explain.”

Behind him appeared a photograph of a child standing unharmed inside a burned laboratory.

The child was Natalie.

“The fire at St. Agnes was not the first fire you survived,” Elias continued. “And cancer is not the greatest danger inside your body.”

The video ended.

Natalie looked at Ethan.

“What did he mean?”

No one knew.

Then the tablet displayed a countdown.

TEN DAYS UNTIL PROTOCOL AWAKENING.
