HE CAME HOME EARLYS / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - the house that Sarah reclaimed

By sunrise, the Mercer estate no longer belonged to Victoria’s secrets.

Federal agents searched every room. They removed computers, forged documents, hidden cameras and boxes of stolen financial records.

Marcus Vale was taken into custody.

Nathan Cole was transported separately under heavy guard.

The two private contractors agreed to cooperate.

Victoria was not immediately arrested, though an agent remained beside her at all times.

David found his mother in the blue room.

The room was still empty except for one chair and several pale marks on the wall where Henry’s photographs had hung.

Sarah stood by the window.

“They found the boxes,” David said. “Everything from this room was stored in a warehouse.”

“Good.”

“We can restore it.”

Sarah looked toward the blank walls.

“I am not sure I want it restored exactly as it was.”

David understood.

For years, the room had represented a perfect memory of Henry. Now every photograph contained questions.

“I should have known something was wrong,” he said.

Sarah turned.

“You were thousands of miles away.”

“I spoke to you.”

“And I lied.”

“Because Victoria threatened you.”

“Because I thought protecting you meant keeping you unaware.”

David looked down.

“That is what Dad thought too.”

Sarah’s expression tightened at the comparison.

Then she sighed.

“Yes.”

David sat on the windowsill.

“Why did you stay after the locks were changed?”

“I tried to leave. Marcus had canceled my bank cards and changed the gate codes. When I reached the road, a car followed me. I thought if I ran, they might act before you returned.”

“You could have told a neighbor.”

“They dismissed the staff. They watched the calls. They made certain I appeared confused whenever anyone visited.”

David remembered Victoria’s warnings that Sarah had become forgetful.

“She was preparing to declare you incompetent.”

Sarah nodded.

“The transfer documents included medical authority. Once I signed, they planned to move me into a private facility.”

David’s controlled expression finally broke.

He struck the empty wall with the side of his fist, not hard enough to injure himself but hard enough to release the anger burning through him.

Sarah touched his shoulder.

“Do not let what they did turn this home into a place of anger.”

“They made you kneel.”

“They wanted me to feel powerless.”

“You were alone.”

“No,” she said. “Someone kept leaving messages.”

David looked at her.

“The note beneath your door?”

“There were others. A key in my meal tray. A map inside a laundry bag. Someone in the house was helping me.”

“Who?”

“I do not know.”

A federal agent appeared in the doorway.

“Captain Mercer, we found something in the servants’ quarters.”

He led David and Sarah downstairs.

Behind a loose section of wall, investigators had discovered a small surveillance station. Photographs of Sarah covered one side. None showed her in private moments. Instead, they documented each time Victoria or Marcus entered her room.

A notebook recorded dates, threats and documents.

At the bottom of the final page was a handwritten message.

I could not stop them, but I made sure someone would know.

The notebook belonged to Rosa Delgado, the estate’s former housekeeper.

“Where is she?” Sarah asked.

The agent hesitated.

“We are trying to locate her.”

“She was dismissed five weeks ago.”

“She never returned to her apartment.”

David felt unease replace his relief.

“Was she taken?”

“We do not know.”

The agent handed him a small envelope found beside the notebook.

David’s name was written across the front.

Inside was a memory card.

They played it on a federal laptop.

The video showed Victoria and Marcus arguing in the foyer two nights earlier.

“You promised Sarah would not be harmed,” Victoria said.

Marcus responded, “Pierce no longer cares about the promise.”

“What about David?”

“He will come home, open the vault and return to duty believing his mother died in her sleep.”

Victoria turned toward the security camera.

For a fraction of a second, her eyes focused directly on it.

Then she said six words.

“Come home before she signs everything.”

Rosa had captured the warning and sent it to David.

But the final seconds of the recording revealed something else.

After Victoria left, Marcus made a phone call.

“The Mercer woman still refuses,” he said. “Prepare the second mother.”

David replayed the sentence.

Sarah stared at the screen.

“What does that mean?”

No one had an answer.

Then an agent rushed into the room.

“Captain, Marcus has disappeared from federal transport.”
