Chapter 11 - The Price of a Name

Vernon survived.

Doctors removed the token and treated him for a fast-acting toxin. The attempt on his life changed his confidence more effectively than any interrogation. When Rebecca entered the guarded hospital room, he no longer looked like the man who had ruled a household through volume and fear. He looked like a clerk who had discovered the account would finally be audited.

"They tried to kill me," he said.

"You spent decades helping them kill others."

"I can give you names."

"Give them to the investigators."

"I will only speak to you."

Rebecca remained standing. "Then speak."

Vernon admitted joining Meridian after selling Anna's placement. He claimed he believed she would have a privileged life. In return, Meridian paid his debts and gave him shipping contracts. Years later, when Thomas uncovered counterfeit parts, Vernon was ordered to secure the documents. He chose to exploit the situation instead, keeping copies as insurance.

"You told me Thomas abandoned us."

"I thought he would die."

"He wrote forty-three letters."

Vernon looked at the wall.

"You read them."

Silence answered.

Rebecca's voice lowered. "You watched me work nights. You knew Caleb asked why his father left. You knew Thomas begged to see us. And every day you chose the lie again."

"If Thomas returned, Meridian would have destroyed all of you."

"Do not rename possession as protection."

Vernon began to cry, but Rebecca recognized the tears. They were not remorse. They were terror seeking a sympathetic witness.

He said Abigail Lane was Anna, but she had become more dangerous than Meridian. As Lantern, she collected evidence not to expose the network immediately but to control it. She allowed some operations to continue while redirecting others. Malcolm Grant wanted a public reckoning. Abigail wanted a private empire of leverage.

"Margaret discovered that," Vernon said. "She moved Thomas before Abigail could use him. Wren killed Margaret on Abigail's order."

Rebecca did not believe him fully. Vernon mixed truth and poison instinctively.

"Proof?"

"A ledger in the Vale house. Behind the nursery wall. Your mother hid it there."

The nursery had been Rebecca's room before she was born. Vernon had later converted it into an office. Investigators searched the wall and found a narrow cavity containing a leather ledger wrapped in oilcloth.

The ledger recorded decades of Meridian payments. Beside each transaction was a letter code. V referred to Vernon. D referred to Diane. W referred to Wren. L appeared beside interventions that prevented deaths, released witnesses, or redirected stolen money back to victims.

Lantern had indeed operated inside Meridian, but the pattern did not look like empire-building. It looked like sabotage conducted slowly enough to survive.

One recent entry changed everything.

M. Vale extraction of T. Hart approved by L.

Margaret had not acted alone. Lantern authorized Thomas's rescue.

Another entry followed three weeks later.

Wren requests termination. L denies.

If Abigail was Lantern, she had tried to keep Thomas alive.

Vernon had lied again.

Caleb found a final code on the ledger's inside cover: a date, a time, and the initials R.H.

The date was two days away. The location was the National Remembrance Hall in Washington, where Rebecca was scheduled to receive a humanitarian service award. R.H. could mean Rebecca Hart.

A Meridian meeting had been planned around her ceremony.

Elias urged Rebecca to cancel. She refused.

"They have controlled the stage for twenty-seven years," she said. "Let them come to mine."

Security transformed the ceremony into a controlled operation. Thomas remained under guard. Nora Bell entered witness protection. Diane negotiated a plea and confirmed that Wren planned to attend disguised as medical staff.

The evening before the award, Caleb received a package at his hotel.

Inside was the forged rejection letter Vernon had shown Rebecca twenty-seven years earlier.

Beneath it lay the original letter Thomas wrote before his final flight.

Rebecca,

If anything happens, know that I chose you and our child before I knew whether the child was a son or daughter. I have filed documents with someone I trust. Her name is Anna.

Rebecca read the final line twice.

May you like

Thomas had known her sister.

And he had known her true name before Rebecca knew she existed.
