Chapter 14 - The Twelve Seats

Richard's transport vehicle was found beneath an overpass with its rear door open.
The guards were alive but sedated. Their body cameras had been erased. A message written on the windshield read:
A Hawthorne always returns home.
Authorities assumed Helena had taken him. Sarah was not certain.
Richard knew the Geneva vault required his presence. Escaping custody could be betrayal, coercion, or part of a plan he had not trusted them enough to share. None of the possibilities made him safe.
Mara located a private jet registered to one of Helena's shell companies. It departed New York ninety minutes after Richard disappeared and landed outside Geneva.
Alexander wanted Sarah to remain behind. This time he did not forbid her. He simply said, "I am afraid."
"So am I."
They left the children with Rebecca and Miriam under tribunal protection. Daniel gave Sarah the metal kingfisher. Emma made her promise not to let "the mean grandmother" speak for too long. Lily asked whether Geneva had cake.
"Everywhere has cake," Alexander assured her.
The vault occupied the lowest level of a private bank overlooking the Rhône. Mara had obtained service credentials. Sarah and Alexander entered disguised as legal auditors while international agents waited for confirmation that the Seat agreements were inside.
The biometric chamber was already open.
Richard stood beside the inner door wearing the same suit in which he disappeared. No restraints. No visible injuries.
Sarah stopped. "Did you escape?"
"Yes."
Alexander raised his weapon. "Why?"
"Because the transport team had a Custodian inside it. If I remained, I would have been delivered to a black site before reaching the airport. I used the sedative intended for me."
"You could have contacted us."
"Every communication channel was monitored."
Sarah removed Daniel's kingfisher and activated it. "Then everything from this point is recorded independently."
Richard nodded. "Good."
He pressed his hand to the scanner. The vault opened onto a round room with twelve chairs arranged around a black table. Each chair faced a secure terminal.
Helena sat in the Hawthorne seat.
Arthur Kessler occupied the Vale seat under guard, apparently released or abducted from custody. Ten other figures appeared through encrypted video feeds, their faces hidden by shifting digital masks.
"Welcome," Helena said. "The family has arrived."
Richard moved toward her. "You took Noah. You tried to kill Sarah. You used Celeste. Was any part of my life real?"
"Your appetite was real. Your weakness was real. I simply built profitable structures around both."
Sarah saw the blow land. Helena did not need a weapon to injure him.
One masked Seat spoke. "The Continuity Tribunal has exceeded its mandate. The registry must be destroyed."
Mara's voice came through Sarah's earpiece. "We are receiving the kingfisher feed. Keep them talking."
Sarah placed Thomas's paper ledger on the table. "You are afraid of names."
"We are afraid of chaos," another Seat replied.
"No. You are afraid that people you treated as assets will become witnesses."
Kessler looked exhausted. "Sarah, the Seats control more than companies. If you expose them without transition, hospitals lose funding, governments collapse, and children become targets for every inheritance dispute on earth."
"Then help us build the transition instead of demanding silence."
"They will never agree."
Helena smiled. "At last, Arthur says something true."
Richard approached the Hawthorne terminal. "What does my biometric access control?"
"The physical registry," Helena said. "And the liquidation protocol."
"You brought me here to destroy it."
"I brought you here to choose your family."
A screen displayed Hawthorne Global assets, frozen accounts, and a proposed immunity agreement. If Richard authorized destruction, his criminal charges would disappear through political intervention and control of the company would return to him.
The offer was everything the old Richard would have accepted.
Sarah watched him read it.
"You always said I was your greatest disappointment," he told Helena.
"You still have time to correct that."
Richard placed his hand on the scanner.
Alexander raised his weapon, but Sarah stopped him. The kingfisher recorded every breath.
The terminal asked:
AUTHORIZE REGISTRY LIQUIDATION?
Richard pressed NO.
Then he opened the Hawthorne archive and transferred its entire contents to the tribunal's public escrow server.
Helena's calm shattered. She struck him across the face.
Agents breached the outer vault. Alarms sounded. The masked Seat feeds began disconnecting, but Mara captured routing data from seven of them.
Helena drew a concealed pistol and aimed at Sarah.
Kessler moved first. The bullet struck him in the chest.
Alexander fired at Helena's arm. Richard tackled her. For several seconds mother and son struggled on the floor beneath the twelve chairs.
"You are nothing without me!" Helena screamed.
Richard pinned her wrist until agents reached them. "Then I will learn to be nothing."
Helena was taken alive.
Kessler died before medical help arrived. His final words to Alexander were, "Do better than we did."
The Seat agreements entered secure custody. Seven members were identified within hours. Three countries issued arrest warrants. Two governments denied involvement. Markets fell, then stabilized when the tribunal announced a phased disclosure process.
Sarah returned home believing the central battle was over.
Richard was sentenced to six years in federal prison, reduced for cooperation. He accepted the judgment without appeal. Rebecca allowed Noah supervised monthly visits. Daniel and Emma chose not to participate.
Helena awaited trial in isolation.
Alexander began rebuilding Greyhaven as a survivor resource center rather than a private fortress.
For six peaceful weeks, no threats arrived.
Then Mara called Sarah at midnight.
"One of the Twelve Seats was never connected to Meridian," she said. "It was connected to the tribunal before Meridian existed."
"Which seat?"
"The one marked with the kingfisher."

Sarah looked at the metal bird on her desk.
A tiny light inside it began blinking, though Daniel had removed the battery after Geneva.
