Chapter 7 - The Words Ruth Prepared

Pastor Michael broke the seal.
Inside were copies of Ruth’s revised trust, the revoked financial authorization, bank records, the black ledger and a handwritten letter.
Daniel confirmed that the original documents had already been secured.
Pastor Michael unfolded the letter.
“My dear family,” he read, “if these words are being shared, it means John has once again placed money above the people who loved him.”
John shook his head.
“This is ridiculous.”
The officer warned him not to interrupt.
The pastor continued.
“I spent years excusing my son’s choices because I remembered the kind boy he once was. I mistook my memories for evidence that he would become that person again.”
Ruth watched John without blinking.
“I gave him access to my accounts, authority over my property and more trust than he had earned. He answered that trust by taking money, forging my name and waiting for illness to silence me.”
Helen began to cry.
Pastor Michael read the final paragraph.
“John Bellamy is removed as executor, trustee and beneficiary of my estate. He will receive only the family photographs and letters that belonged to his father. Perhaps they will remind him that inheritance is not the same as love.”
John laughed bitterly.
“You’re leaving everything to Emma?”
Emma looked at Ruth. She did not know the answer.
The pastor returned to the letter.
“Bellamy House will pass into the Ruth Bellamy Community Trust. It will become a home for children leaving foster care, young mothers completing their education and elderly residents who can no longer live alone.”
John stared at his mother.
“You’re giving my house to strangers?”
“It was never your house,” Ruth said.
Pastor Michael continued.
“Emma will serve as the first director of the trust, but she will not own its assets. She will receive a fair salary and may live in the east cottage for as long as she serves the community honestly.”
John turned to Emma.
“You planned this.”
“No.”
“You always hated me.”
“I kept hoping you would prove everyone wrong.”
The officers informed John that he was being investigated for fraud, theft and the use of forged documents.
As they escorted him from the room, he looked back at Ruth.
For one moment, he no longer appeared angry.
He appeared afraid.
“Mother, please.”
May you like
Ruth closed her eyes.
“You had years to say that before you were caught.”
