FIVE SECONDS / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - Subject 1

Rachel stopped at the doorway.

Daniel was older, thinner and marked by years she had not witnessed, but his eyes were the same.

She had spent countless nights imagining what she would say if he returned.

Now there was no time for any of it.

“How do I release you?” she asked.

Daniel looked toward the observation camera.

“You don’t. Mercer needs me connected to the system.”

Noah Bell opened his eyes.

He was weak but conscious.

“Rachel?”

“I’m here.”

Daniel’s wrist device displayed hundreds of biometric signals from the training field.

Each soldier’s safety gates were linked to his heart rate.

If Daniel attempted to remove the device or leave the marked area, the system would interpret it as an emergency breach and lock every section of the course.

Mercer had turned Subject 1 into a living control key.

“Why you?” Rachel asked.

“Because my nervous response is the foundation of Threshold. The system recognizes me as its original administrator.”

“You helped build it?”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I helped design the resistance model. I thought it would protect captured soldiers from manipulation.”

“And when they changed it?”

“I tried to expose them.”

“Vale said you disappeared.”

“Vale helped me disappear.”

Rachel absorbed that.

“He told me he had been searching for you.”

“He has been searching for what I took.”

Noah struggled against the chair.

“The root authorization.”

Daniel nodded.

“Every Threshold system is controlled by a master command file. Without it, Mercer can run exercises, alter records and copy identities, but he cannot expand the program beyond Fort Halden.”

“Where is the file?” Rachel asked.

Daniel looked at her.

“You have it.”

“I don’t.”

“The medical device you took from Range 12. I hid the root code inside my biometric archive.”

Rachel had copied evidence onto that device.

It was now in Major Cruz’s possession.

Mercer’s voice came through the camera speaker.

“Family reunions are always disappointing.”

Daniel looked toward the camera.

“You told me she wouldn’t be involved.”

“I told you many things.”

Rachel searched the room for a manual override.

Mercer continued.

“Give me the device, Advisor Hayes. I release the soldiers, Noah Bell and your brother.”

“You expect me to trust you?”

“No. I expect you to understand arithmetic. Three hundred lives against one file.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Don’t give it to him.”

“The field gates are closing.”

“If Mercer gets root authorization, Fort Halden becomes one of hundreds.”

Rachel contacted Cruz through the emergency radio.

“Do you have Daniel’s medical device?”

Cruz answered from a maintenance control room.

“Yes.”

“Do not connect it to any network.”

“I already found the root archive.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Can you disable the field locks?”

“The archive requires Subject 1 biometric confirmation.”

Daniel raised his wrist.

Mercer had built the system so only Daniel could unlock it.

Rachel examined the control device.

“What response does it require?”

“Pulse sequence, skin conductivity and a spoken authorization.”

“Can the sequence be copied?”

“Not accurately.”

Rachel remembered the purpose of Threshold.

It copied voices, signatures, access codes and patterns.

But Noah’s letter had said it could not copy choices.

“What happens if you refuse to authorize Mercer?” she asked.

“He increases the pressure until I comply.”

“That is what he has done for nine years?”

Daniel met her eyes.

“Yes.”

Rachel understood why he had survived.

He had been resisting every day.

On the field, the temperature systems continued climbing.

Dr. Kent had gained access to one emergency circuit but could not release the main gates.

Jake organized the soldiers into shaded areas and rationed the available water.

Security teams surrounded them but had not entered.

Mercer wanted control, not public casualties.

Rachel contacted Jake.

“I need time.”

“You have six minutes before the first enclosed sector reaches the emergency limit.”

Daniel heard him.

“That voice.”

“Captain Jake Rowan.”

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“He was at Range 12.”

“He helped me find you.”

“He signed the original transfer orders.”

“His identity was copied.”

Daniel stared at the camera.

“Mercer copied everyone except the person above him.”

Rachel moved closer to Daniel.

“Who is above him?”

Before Daniel could answer, the room door sealed.

Gas began entering Noah’s chamber.

Rachel ran to the glass partition.

Mercer’s voice remained calm.

“Five minutes, Advisor Hayes.”

Noah’s breathing became shallow.

Daniel looked at the wrist device.

“He wants me to authorize the root transfer.”

Rachel took out the data receiver she had removed from the observation center.

“What if you do?”

“Then he wins.”

“What exact words activate the transfer?”

Daniel told her.

Rachel connected the receiver to the room’s local control port.

“Say them.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand the program copies obedience.”

She began changing the destination code.

“We’re going to give Mercer exactly what he ordered.”

Daniel saw what she was doing.

For the first time, he smiled.

He spoke the authorization phrase.

The system accepted his biometric sequence.

The root archive began transferring.

Mercer’s command terminal displayed a successful connection.

He released Noah’s gas valve and opened the field gates.

Then every classified Threshold file began uploading to the offices of military investigators, medical inspectors, federal prosecutors and the families of affected soldiers.

Mercer stared at his screen.

May you like

Rachel’s voice came through the command system.

“You should have checked the destination.”
