Exactly What You Gave Me

On the afternoon of the anniversary, Savannah arrived early.

The living room looked beautiful. Gold ribbons framed the windows. White flowers covered the tables. Photographs from forty years of marriage hung along one wall.

The silver Mercedes gleamed in the driveway.

Savannah had chosen a navy-blue dress her mother once said made her look elegant. She carried the keys because the detailing company had returned the car directly to her.

Elaine inspected the room without thanking her.

“The dessert table should be moved two inches to the left,” she said.

Savannah adjusted it.

Charles complained that the photographer was late, although he had arrived ten minutes early.

Nolan appeared shortly before the guests, wearing a new gray polo.

“Nice shirt,” Savannah said.

“Mom bought it.”

Savannah recognized the charge on her own credit card.

She said nothing.

The party began at four. Friends and relatives praised the decorations, the food, and the car outside.

Charles accepted every compliment.

Nolan delivered his speech after dinner.

He described his parents as generous, loyal, and endlessly supportive. He told stories about family vacations Savannah had funded and emergencies Savannah had solved, but he never mentioned her name.

Then he raised his glass.

“To Mom and Dad, who taught me that family always comes first.”

Everyone applauded.

Savannah sat at the small table by the kitchen.

Her untouched meal grew cold.

During the photographs, the photographer asked Savannah to join her parents and Nolan.

Elaine stopped him.

“Let us take one with the immediate family first.”

The photographer looked confused.

Savannah felt the room tilt.

Nolan, Elaine, and Charles stood together beneath the gold decorations.

Savannah remained outside the frame.
