Chapter 3 - THE DOCUMENT INSIDE THE LINING

Evelyn moved toward the suitcase without calling Grant.

The zipper was closed, but the small brass lock hung open. Someone had entered the combination correctly or replaced the lock after opening it.

She carried the suitcase into the dressing room and shut the door.

Her clothing appeared untouched.

Beneath the folded dresses, however, the fabric lining had been cut along one edge and carefully resealed with transparent thread.

Evelyn used a manicure knife to open it.

Inside was a thin envelope bearing the name of a private medical clinic.

The documents claimed that Evelyn had been examined four weeks earlier for memory loss, emotional instability, and impaired judgment. According to the report, she had forgotten important meetings, accused employees of stealing, and shown signs of paranoia.

The doctor recommended that she temporarily surrender control of her business and personal finances.

Evelyn had never visited the clinic.

The form contained her date of birth, passport number, medical insurance information, and another forged signature.

Attached to it was a petition naming Grant as her temporary financial guardian.

She read every page twice.

Then she photographed the documents and returned them to the lining.

The plan became painfully clear.

Grant did not intend to divorce her before taking the company.

He intended to declare her incapable of protecting it.

If Evelyn publicly accused him now, the false medical report could be used to portray her as unstable. If she became angry, she would appear irrational. If she made sudden changes to company accounts, Grant could describe them as reckless decisions.

Even the anonymous messages could be twisted into evidence of paranoia.

Someone had designed the trap with legal precision.

Grant was ambitious, but he was not patient enough to build something this complicated alone.

Evelyn left the dressing room and found him sitting on the bed.

“You were gone a long time,” he said.

“I couldn’t find my earrings.”

“You’re wearing them.”

“The other pair.”

Grant smiled without warmth.

“You’ve seemed distracted since we arrived.”

“Have I?”

“You forgot our dinner reservation.”

“You arrived over an hour late.”

“That isn’t what I mean.” Grant stood. “You’ve been suspicious. Distant.”

Evelyn understood what he was doing.

He was building a record.

A concerned husband observing his wife’s changing behavior.

“I’m tired from the flight,” she replied calmly.

“Perhaps you should see someone.”

The sentence confirmed everything.

Evelyn walked past him and opened the balcony doors.

“I’ll feel better after some sleep.”

Grant watched her.

For the first time, she allowed herself to look vulnerable.

It was not difficult. The betrayal was real, even if the weakness was performed.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I haven’t been myself.”

Grant’s shoulders relaxed.

He believed she was entering the role he had written for her.

He approached and placed his hands around her waist.

“We’ll fix everything.”

Evelyn forced herself not to pull away.

“How?”

“Let me take care of the difficult decisions for a while.”

“About the company?”

“About everything.”

She rested her head against his chest.

Beneath his shirt, his heart was beating quickly.

Grant was nervous.

Good.

“I trust you,” she whispered.

His arms tightened around her.

Over his shoulder, Evelyn saw his phone lying on the bed.

The screen lit up.

Celeste had sent a message.

She found the report. I left the suitcase exactly as instructed.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

The anonymous source had not placed the medical report inside her luggage.

Celeste had.

That meant the report was not intended to be discovered accidentally.

Grant wanted Evelyn to find it.

He wanted her frightened, confused, and uncertain whom she could trust.

But why?

The answer came the following morning.

At breakfast, Grant suggested they meet Dr. Elias Rowan, a wellness specialist who happened to be staying at the resort.

“He works with executives under stress,” Grant explained.

“How convenient.”

“I asked the hotel to arrange it.”

“When?”

“After you became confused last night.”

Evelyn stirred her tea.

“What did I confuse?”

“Our dinner reservation.”

She looked at him.

Grant continued eating as though the lie were ordinary.

“I remember the reservation perfectly.”

“You told me you forgot.”

“No. I said you arrived late.”

Grant placed his fork down.

“Evelyn, we should not argue about details.”

“Details are usually where the truth is hiding.”

For a moment, the mask slipped.

His eyes hardened.

Then Celeste appeared near the restaurant entrance.

Today she wore a pale blue dress and carried a leather portfolio.

Grant pretended not to see her.

Evelyn raised one hand.

“Celeste. Come join us.”

Celeste approached reluctantly.

Evelyn pointed to the empty chair.

“Grant tells me there is a doctor at the resort who specializes in confused executives.”

Celeste looked at Grant.

Grant answered for her.

“Celeste knows nothing about it.”

“I didn’t ask Grant.”

Celeste sat slowly.

“No,” she said. “I don’t know him.”

“Then why is his clinic listed as a consulting partner for Crown Vale International?”

Celeste’s face lost color.

Grant turned toward Evelyn.

“Where did you hear that name?”

Evelyn smiled.

“I must be confused.”

She stood and left the table.

The moment she entered the lobby, her phone rang.

Nadia was calling from the company’s headquarters.

“I found the medical petition,” Nadia said.

“Has it been filed?”

“Not yet. But a board emergency meeting has been scheduled for Friday morning.”

“Who scheduled it?”

“Grant.”

“What is the stated purpose?”

“To discuss executive continuity in the event of your temporary incapacity.”

Friday was four days away.

Evelyn looked through the lobby windows at the private marina.

A black yacht waited at the dock.

Several crew members were loading suitcases aboard.

One suitcase belonged to Celeste.

“Nadia, I need every ownership document connected to the Solara Crown.”

“Why?”

“Because Grant is not planning to take control and remain here.”

Evelyn watched him enter the lobby behind her.

“He is planning to take control and disappear.”

Grant stopped when he saw the yacht.

Then he looked at Evelyn.

Neither of them spoke.

A crew member lifted another suitcase onto the deck.

The luggage was black, expensive, and marked with Grant’s initials.
