Chapter 9 - The Camera Inside the Rabbit
Evan Mercer was thirty-two years old.
Police found his hidden birth record inside the Northbridge server archive.
His mother was listed as Laura Gray, a former Mercer Foundation accountant who disappeared twenty-nine years earlier.
His father was Thomas Mercer.
Daniel read the record three times.
He remembered Laura only vaguely. She had attended family events when he was a child, but then her name vanished from conversation.
Thomas had never mentioned a third son.
Neither had Malcolm.
Lucas studied the photograph extracted from Evan’s file.
The resemblance between them was stronger than the hospital footage had shown. They shared the same jawline and dark eyes, but Evan did not have Lucas’s eyebrow scar.
“Sarah knew immediately,” Daniel said.
“She sees more than we do,” Lucas replied.
Daniel had not forgiven him.
But there was no time to remain divided.
Police worked through the footage from the rabbit camera.
The first video showed Malcolm ordering Evan to collect Sarah’s school records.
The second showed Dr. Kessler rehearsing questions with Rachel.
The third showed Rachel attempting to end the arrangement.
“I will not bring her back here,” Rachel said.
Malcolm stood near the glass partition.
“You misunderstand your position.”
“You promised Daniel would only lose temporary custody.”
“And he has.”
“You are changing her trust.”
“I am protecting it.”
“For yourself.”
Malcolm moved closer to her.
“Your signature appears on every document.”
“I was deceived.”
“A court may not see it that way.”
Rachel looked toward Sarah, who sat outside the camera’s view.
“If you touch my daughter again, I will tell Daniel everything.”
“You should have done that months ago.”
Malcolm’s voice remained calm.
“Now he will never believe you.”
The recording proved Rachel had eventually tried to protect Sarah.
It also proved she had knowingly continued the deception after realizing what Malcolm was doing.
The evidence would not erase her responsibility.
It would, however, expose Malcolm’s control.
Another video showed Evan alone with Sarah.
He knelt in front of her and placed the cloth rabbit in her hands.
“Keep this near you,” he said.
“Why?”
“Because it remembers things.”
“Mom says cameras are bad.”
“Some cameras tell the truth.”
“Are you Uncle Lucas?”
Evan looked toward the door.
“No.”
“Why do you look like him?”
“Because we have the same father.”
Sarah frowned.
“Grandpa?”
Evan nodded.
“Is Grandpa alive?”
Evan’s face tightened.
“He was the last time I saw him.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know now.”
He placed the rabbit inside Sarah’s backpack.
“If you see him again, hold the rabbit where he can see it.”
The footage ended.
Daniel leaned toward the screen.
“Evan was helping her.”
“Sometimes,” Quinn said. “That does not mean he is innocent.”
The next video confirmed her warning.
Evan entered the blue room with a folder and told Malcolm that Sarah had attempted to call Daniel.
Malcolm ordered the home phones disabled.
Evan complied.
Later, however, Evan secretly restored access to one neighbor’s wireless network, allowing Sarah to contact Claire.
He was working both sides.
Or trying to survive between them.
The final recording began on the morning Sarah was found outside.
Rachel was packing a bag.
Sarah sat near the kitchen table with the rabbit beside her.
Evan entered.
“You need to leave now,” Rachel said.
“Malcolm knows.”
“Knows what?”
“That you found Thomas’s message.”
Rachel stopped moving.
“How?”
“Judge Ellison told him.”
Daniel looked toward Detective Quinn.
The custody judge was directly involved.
The footage continued.
Rachel pushed Sarah toward the rear door.
“Go to Mrs. Carter’s house. Ask to use the phone.”
Evan blocked the doorway.
“Malcolm wants her at Northbridge.”
“She is not going back.”
“I cannot let you leave.”
Rachel stared at him.
“You gave her the camera.”
Evan looked toward the rabbit.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then he stepped aside.
“Take the service exit.”
Rachel grabbed Sarah’s hand.
Before they reached the garage, Malcolm appeared on the wall monitor.
“Evan,” he said. “Close the door.”
Evan pressed a button.
The door locked.
Rachel shouted at him.
Evan looked sick.
Malcolm continued.
“Bring Sarah to the vehicle. Rachel stays in the room.”
Evan reached for Sarah’s backpack.
She pulled away.
The rabbit fell behind a chair.
Evan led Sarah upstairs.
Rachel remained trapped in the blue room.
The recording continued from the floor.
Voices echoed overhead.
Then Evan returned alone.
He picked up the rabbit and looked directly into its camera.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
He carried it upstairs and placed it inside Sarah’s backpack.
That explained how it reached the hospital.
Evan had obeyed Malcolm, but he had also preserved the evidence.
The next section contained only audio.
Sarah asked where they were going.
Evan said, “Somewhere your father can find you.”
Minutes later, Claire’s car approached.
Evan told Sarah to wait near the driveway and ran toward the service road.
He had not abandoned her.
He had delivered her to the one person nearby who might help.
The last thirty seconds of the footage showed Malcolm entering Rachel’s house after everyone was gone.
He walked into the kitchen with Judge Warren Ellison.
The judge removed a folder from his coat.
“The trust transfer is prepared,” Ellison said. “But if Daniel obtains emergency custody, we lose the dependency argument.”
Malcolm looked toward the camera without noticing it.
“Then Daniel must not leave the hospital with the child.”
“What do you intend to do?”
“Move the final account before sunrise.”
“What final account?”
Malcolm’s expression darkened.
“The one Thomas built beneath the foundation.”
The recording ended.
Within an hour, Judge Ellison was arrested while attempting to leave the state.
Dr. Kessler agreed to cooperate.
Northbridge’s accounts were frozen.
Every custody evaluation completed under Kessler’s supervision was placed under review.
Rachel was formally charged with falsifying statements and interfering with Daniel’s custody rights, but prosecutors acknowledged her cooperation and Malcolm’s threats.
Lucas was cleared of initiating the trust transfer.
Malcolm remained missing.
So did Evan.
The following morning, Daniel stood in family court beside his attorney.
Rachel sat across the room in a plain dark dress.
She looked exhausted.
When Sarah’s temporary custody was discussed, Rachel did not object.
“I failed to protect her,” she told the judge replacing Ellison. “Her father did not.”
Daniel looked at her.
For the first time in months, she told the truth without being forced.
The judge granted Daniel emergency custody.
Rachel would be allowed supervised contact after Sarah’s treatment team approved it.
Sarah was safe.
The trust was safe.
Malcolm’s organization had been exposed.
It should have felt like an ending.
As Daniel left the courthouse holding Sarah’s hand, Detective Quinn called his name.
She carried the sealed hospital evidence envelope.
The same envelope everyone believed had been stolen.
“We recovered this from Judge Ellison’s vehicle,” she said.
Daniel stopped.
“What was he doing with it?”
“We don’t know.”
“You said Nurse Evelyn scanned everything.”
“She scanned the visible documents.”
