Chapter 6 - The Recording Behind the Wall

The name on the note was Thomas Vale.
Christopher knew it immediately.
Thomas had worked as the Mercer family’s attorney for nearly twenty years. He prepared the trust documents, handled property transfers and appeared at every major family event.
After Melissa disappeared, Thomas assured James that she could not access any more family money. He also helped Carolyn produce the records that supposedly explained the missing trust funds.
Ruiz ordered officers to locate him.
Thomas’s house was empty.
His car was gone, and his phone had been switched off shortly after midnight.
At the hospital, Sarah explained that the note had once been larger. Carolyn had torn away the lower half and placed it in her desk.
Sarah remembered seeing Thomas’s name before the paper was ripped.
“She told him to take Mommy’s car,” Sarah said.
“Did you hear her say why?” Ruiz asked.
“She said the police couldn’t find it near the house.”
Carolyn was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and evidence tampering while investigators continued searching the lake property.
She demanded an attorney.
She also demanded to speak with James.
He refused.
James arrived at the hospital shortly before four in the morning. He entered the examination room, saw Sarah wrapped in a hospital blanket and dropped to his knees in front of her.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Sarah touched his face.
“Are you mad at me?”
“No.”
“At Mommy?”
James closed his eyes.
“No.”
She leaned into him.
James held her carefully, as though he feared she might disappear too.
Christopher waited near the doorway.
When James looked up, there was no defensiveness left in his expression.
“I should have listened to you.”
“This is not the time.”
“It is exactly the time.”
“Sarah needs you present, not guilty.”
James nodded and turned his attention back to his daughter.
Ruiz entered the room.
“The search team found the financial evidence,” she told him. “Your mother appears to have transferred money through companies controlled by Thomas Vale.”
James stared at the floor.
“And Melissa?”
“We found her vehicle. We haven’t found her.”
Sarah looked toward the detective.
“Mommy made another recording.”
“Where?”
“In the room under the stairs.”
“We found a camera and hard drive.”
Sarah shook her head.
“Not those.”
She looked at Christopher.
“Mommy said the safest place was behind Grandpa.”
The lake house had once contained a large portrait of James and Christopher’s father. It had hung in the main hallway beside the staircase.
Christopher remembered the pale rectangle on the wall where the portrait had been removed.
“Behind Grandpa,” he repeated.
Ruiz called the search team.
Officers inspected the wall.
At first, they found nothing. Then a technician noticed that one section produced a hollow sound when tapped. A narrow compartment had been built between two studs.
Inside was a small memory card sealed in plastic.
The card contained one video.
Melissa appeared on the screen seated inside the hidden room. She wore the green wool coat with brass buttons. Her hair was pulled back, and her eyes were red from exhaustion.
The recording was dated the night before she disappeared.
“My name is Melissa Mercer,” she began. “I am making this video because I believe Carolyn Mercer and Thomas Vale have stolen money from the Mercer education trust and forged my husband’s signature.”
She held documents toward the camera.
“I discovered the transfers six months ago. When I confronted Carolyn, she told me the money belonged to her because she built this family after her husband died. She said James and Christopher owed her everything.”
Melissa took a breath.
“Two weeks ago, I learned they were preparing new documents that would place our home and James’s business under a company controlled by Thomas. I copied everything.”
Her expression changed.
“This is no longer only about money.”
She explained that Carolyn had begun questioning Sarah about conversations inside the house. She wanted to know what Melissa had told Christopher and whether Sarah had seen the financial documents.
“When Sarah refused to answer, Carolyn punished her by leaving her outside for nearly an hour. Carolyn called it discipline. I told her she would never be alone with Sarah again.”
Melissa looked directly into the camera.
“Carolyn said no one would believe me. She said she had spent decades becoming the woman everyone trusted, while I was only the difficult daughter-in-law who wanted to take her son away.”
The recording paused as Melissa wiped her face.
“If I disappear, I did not leave Sarah. I would never leave her.”
In the hospital room, James covered his mouth.
Sarah watched the screen without moving.
Melissa continued.
“I am meeting Detective Ruiz tomorrow morning. Christopher, if you see this, the evidence is in three places. One copy is here. One was sent to an accountant in Denver. The last is with someone Carolyn does not know.”
Christopher looked at Ruiz.
“Did Melissa have an appointment with you?”
Ruiz appeared shaken.
“No. I was not assigned to financial crimes until three months later.”
Melissa must have intended to meet another detective, but Carolyn may have intercepted the plan.
The recording continued.
“If James is watching, please understand that your mother’s love has always required obedience. I know you wanted peace. But peace built on fear is not peace.”
James lowered his head.
“I am taking Sarah to my sister’s house after the meeting. I have packed only what we need. Once the police have the documents, I will call you.”
Melissa glanced toward the door.
A sound occurred outside the room.
She stopped speaking.
Then she leaned closer to the camera.
“Someone is here.”
The video ended.
Ruiz immediately contacted the forensic laboratory.
They enhanced the final seconds of audio.
Beneath the sound of Melissa’s breathing, two voices could be heard in the hallway.
One belonged to Carolyn.
The other belonged to Thomas Vale.

Thomas said, “Her car is outside.”
Carolyn replied, “Then make sure it is the last place anyone looks.”
