Chapter 9 - The Brother Without a Rescue
The engagement ended before midnight.
Bianca moved out of Julian’s apartment the next morning. Vanessa threatened to sue everyone involved until Rachel sent her copies of the transfers made to her consulting firm.
After that, Vanessa became remarkably quiet.
The private audit took six weeks.
It revealed forged approvals, unauthorized transfers, false invoices, and misused company funds totaling one hundred and sixty-three thousand dollars.
Claire did not protect Julian from the evidence.
She also did not pursue revenge beyond what the law required.
Under a formal settlement, Julian surrendered most of his shares to repay the company. He sold his apartment and returned the remaining money. The company declined to recommend criminal prosecution after full restitution, though the forged lending documents remained part of the bank’s investigation.
Julian lost his executive title.
For the first time in his adult life, he had to find a job without Claire arranging it.
He called her repeatedly.
At first, his messages were angry.
Then they became desperate.
Finally, three months after the party, he left a voicemail without excuses.
“I thought being the older brother meant people should respect me. You earned everything I pretended to have. I know saying sorry does not repair it. I just wanted you to hear me say that.”
Claire listened once.
She did not call back immediately.
Forgiveness, she had learned, did not mean restoring someone’s access to your life.
Bianca attempted to rebuild her social reputation by describing the engagement as an emotionally abusive relationship. Several guests believed her until a video from the ballroom appeared online.
The recording showed Bianca deliberately pouring the wine.
It also captured Julian laughing moments earlier when Bianca joked about Claire’s dress.
Public sympathy disappeared.
Bianca’s event-planning sponsors canceled their partnerships. Her followers demanded explanations she could not provide.
Claire did not celebrate Bianca’s downfall.
She simply stopped paying to prevent it.
