Chapter 8 - The Name Chosen Before Birth

Claire did not sleep.
Eleanor’s statement circled through her mind until every memory of Vera’s birth seemed uncertain.
Mara chose her name.
Vera had been born after a complicated pregnancy. Claire remembered Adam holding her hand in the hospital, suggesting names from a list they had created together.
Vera was Adam’s suggestion.
Elise had been Claire’s.
At least, that was what she had always believed.
Rachel returned with the old notebook Claire and Adam had used while choosing names. Most pages contained Claire’s handwriting.
The page with Vera’s name was written by Adam.
Below it was a sentence Claire had never noticed.
A name that means truth.
“Did Adam know Mara before we met?” Claire asked.
Rachel shook her head.
“Not as far as I know.”
Detective Ruiz questioned Eleanor again.
This time, Eleanor explained that Adam had located Mara several years before Vera was born.
He had kept the contact secret because Mara feared Thomas would use Claire to find her. Mara never returned to the city, but she communicated through Adam.
“She wanted to know whether Claire was safe,” Eleanor said.
“Why didn’t Adam tell his wife?”
“Mara asked him not to.”
Claire felt betrayed by the people who claimed to love her.
Mara had hidden to protect her.
Adam had lied to protect her.
Eleanor had remained silent to protect her.
Every one of them had made Claire powerless and called it protection.
“What did Mara mean when she said Vera was never supposed to be with Claire?” Ruiz asked.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“That is not what I meant.”
“Then correct it.”
“I meant Vera was never supposed to be exposed to Thomas.”
“Why was her full name placed in a trust before she was born?”
“Mara arranged it.”
“How?”
“She had access to the trust through Adrian.”
“Why that name?”
“Because Adam told her what he planned to call his daughter.”
Claire entered the interview room.
“You are lying.”
Eleanor looked at her.
“About which part?”
“Adam and I didn’t discuss children until after we were married. Mara’s trust amendment was dated before we met.”
Eleanor’s silence confirmed it.
Rachel placed the document on the table.
“This was not a later amendment. The ink and paper were authenticated. Vera’s name appeared thirteen years before her birth.”
Eleanor pressed her fingers against her temple.
“There are things Thomas never told me.”
“Then stop protecting him.”
“I’m not protecting him.”
“You warned him about the search warrant.”
“I was trying to stop him from destroying the tapes.”
“You helped him enter my house.”
“I didn’t know he intended to take Vera.”
“You stood beside him while he threatened her.”
Eleanor lowered her head.
Claire leaned closer.
“Where would he go?”
“The old St. Catherine’s residence.”
Ruiz checked her notes.
“What is that?”
“A private maternity home that closed thirty years ago. Thomas purchased the building through a shell company.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
Claire did not believe her.
Police reached St. Catherine’s after sunset.
The building stood behind rusted gates on the edge of the county. Its windows had been boarded, but a generator powered several rooms inside.
Thomas’s sedan was parked behind the building.
Officers entered with a warrant.
Thomas was gone.
They found burned papers inside a metal barrel, empty cassette cases, and an entire wall covered in photographs.
Claire.
Mara.
Adam.
Vera.
Some had been taken from public places.
Others had been taken through windows.
Thomas had watched them for years.
The photographs of Vera began the day she left the hospital.
On a desk, Detective Ruiz found a file labeled VERA MERCER.
Inside were school reports, medical records, and copies of private custody documents that had never been filed.
Thomas had prepared to take control of Vera long before the visit to his estate.
In the basement, officers discovered boxes of records from the original St. Catherine’s maternity home.
Birth certificates.
Adoption records.
Payment ledgers.
Several pages carried Thomas’s signature.
Claire’s name appeared in a file dated thirty-six years earlier.
Ruiz read the first page before looking toward her.
“Claire, you need to prepare yourself.”
“For what?”
“The woman listed as your biological mother is not Eleanor Vale.”
Claire stared at the file.
“That’s impossible.”
“The record names someone else.”
“Who?”
Ruiz turned the page.
The name had been partly erased, but several letters remained visible.
Mara Evelyn Vale.
Claire almost laughed.
“My sister was six years older than me.”
“That cannot be the person listed here.”
“Then it’s another Mara.”
Ruiz examined the date.
The record had been altered. The original year was hidden beneath correction fluid.
A second document inside the file referred to a baby girl transferred from St. Catherine’s under a private guardianship arrangement.
The child’s original name had been Vera.
Claire placed one hand against the desk.
“Vera was my name?”
“Possibly.”
A sound came from the hallway.
Officers shouted.
A man ran through the rear exit.
Police pursued him across the grounds.
Claire remained beside the desk, staring at the file that had rewritten her childhood in a single page.
Her phone vibrated.
The anonymous number had sent another photograph.
It showed Thomas standing beside a young pregnant woman outside St. Catherine’s.
The woman’s face had been scratched away.
A message appeared beneath it.

Thomas is not running from the police.
He is going to get Vera.
