Chapter 7 - The Porch

By the time Emily reached the property, Vanessa had placed the suitcases outside.
Daniel arrived in a separate car minutes later, holding divorce papers he had apparently planned to present once the lockout was complete.
He tried to control the confrontation.
He failed.
After Emily told Claire to remove them, the private security officers stepped forward. They did not touch Daniel. They simply positioned themselves between him and the doorway while Claire explained the order.
“You may collect approved personal items at a scheduled time,” Claire said. “You may not enter the residence today.”
Daniel pointed toward the children.
“I have a right to see my children.”
“This order concerns possession of the property,” Claire replied. “Parenting arrangements will be addressed separately.”
Vanessa moved toward her car.
Emily spoke before she reached the steps.
“Leave the house key.”
Vanessa turned.
“I already dropped it.”
“The second key.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
Daniel looked at her.
“You made another copy?”
Vanessa opened her handbag, removed a silver key, and placed it on the railing.
Emily watched the realization spread across Daniel’s face.
Vanessa had prepared to access the house without him.
For the first time, he appeared to understand that he had not been the only person manipulating someone.
“You told me you only had one,” he said.
Vanessa walked away without answering.
Daniel turned toward Emily.
“We need to discuss this privately.”
“No.”
“Emily, please.”
The word sounded unfamiliar in his voice.
Noah peeked around Emily’s jacket.
Daniel noticed.
He crouched several feet away.
“Buddy, Daddy is going to leave for a little while.”
Noah did not move toward him.
“Did you put Mommy’s clothes outside?”
Daniel looked at the open suitcases.
“It was a misunderstanding.”
“No, it wasn’t,” Noah said.
Daniel flinched.
Emily placed a hand on her son’s shoulder.
“You do not have to explain anything right now,” she said gently.
Daniel rose.
“You are turning him against me.”
“You did this in front of him.”
“I thought you would come alone.”
“She was carrying Lily,” Noah said. “And I was with her.”
Daniel had no answer.
Claire gave him instructions for arranging the collection of his remaining belongings. She also informed him that all future communication regarding the property should go through counsel.
As Daniel descended the porch steps, the divorce papers remained scattered behind him.
Vanessa was already sitting in her car.
Daniel approached the passenger door.
It was locked.
He knocked on the window.
Vanessa started the engine and drove away.
Daniel stood in the street watching her disappear.
For a brief moment, Emily felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
Claire helped close the suitcases and carry them inside. The security officers checked every room and confirmed that no one remained in the house.
Vanessa had placed framed photographs of Emily and the children face down on the hallway table. She had moved Margaret’s portrait into a closet.
Emily returned the portrait to its place.
That evening, Noah asked whether his father would ever come home again.
Emily sat between both children on the living-room sofa.
“Daddy will not live here,” she said. “But he is still your father, and the adults will create a safe plan for visits.”
“Is Vanessa living here?” Lily asked.
“No.”
“Is she our new mommy?”
Emily’s chest tightened.
“No one can replace your mother.”
Lily considered this and then rested her head against Emily’s arm.
After the children fell asleep, Emily stood alone on the porch.
The suitcases were gone. The divorce papers had been placed inside a folder for Claire. The white roses remained on the chair.

Emily carried them to the outside trash bin.
Then she changed the house alarm code to Margaret’s birthday.
